Alternator Dead

Postby roy666 » Thu 06.06.2019, 19:57

Hi Guys - seems like my alternator has finally had it. Battery light stays on and volts steadily decreasing on the voltmeter, and dip way down when I turn everything on. Any advice on where to source one other than SJS or Kelvedon. Grateful for a pointer on a place that refurbs or is it possible to get a new lighter model. cheers Mike

Can't comment on other sources of alternators, but I can confirm having just bought an alternator from SJS it is larger that the Original alternator and does not go back in without cutting the little metal tang of the back of the engine, just above the sump

Roy
Might be of help. I have noted following equivalents :
Magneti Marelli 054022713010 / 54022713
MAN 1015

For US/FED car owners, the alternator is the same as the DOHC Geo Storm "manual gearbox" REMY 14390 or DENSO 2100409. The "automatic gearbox" REMY 14391 listing is slightly larger but I have been told that with some aggravation, it can wrestled into place.

The Starter is the same as the Turbo Isuzu Impulse and the 1993 Geo Storm. It is the "gear reduction" version (without the "snout").
The ACDELCO 3231058 is on closeout sale at Rock Auto for $65.09

Remember, GEO was a GM product, so they will use GM part numbers. Re-builders will use the most common interchange for their listings.

Hi Mike. I still have not finished putting the Elan back together, so all I can say is it looks OK. I still need to finish putting the PS reservoir back in and then the alternator belt. Should have that done this weekend. so will report back once I have fired the engine

That’s what I did - it’s not as awful as it sounds - belt adjustment / fitting is also a bit of a challenge with the bigger alternator.

Can I assume this Alternator will fit a UK car?

To the best of my knowledge, those Alternators worked in M100s owned by others.

They fit fine and have the correct pulley on them. They were purchased through different retailers including Rock Auto, and nobody needed to return anything.

I probably did but that was before I discovered 2 "buggert" ones. I suspect a bad batch of Chinese regulators/diodes ?? The 3rd seems to be holding up OK at present (different # ?)
