So what grade oil for an SE

Postby chris.t » Wed 28.12.2016, 13:35

The WIKI sort of says 10W60 can be used, but then says 10W40 is ok, whats the general concensus. Sorry if this has been asked quintrinial times before but search just doesn't work for me!

eta/ Halfords and Opie both say 10W60 for turbo Elan
Could the 'Hokey-Cokey' actually be what it's all about?

For me I use 10w60 as recommended by SJ Spotrscars. I did try a different spec but had problems with increased oil usage.

thx for that Mark, although the more recent posts are a bit fishy. Think I'll get some 10/60.

Elan Handbook says preferred oil is 10W/30, alternative Mobil 1 Rally Formula 5W/50 but was written 25 years ago and oil technology has made significant advances in that time plus there's a lot more choice of fully synthetic now.

My first service was by Kelvedon Lotus and they filled it with "MILLERS OILS CFS 10W-60 COMPETITION FULL SYNTHETIC ENGINE OIL" . I've since been using Castrol Edge 10W-60 as I got 3x5l for price of 2 on a EuroCarParts offer.
Halfords & EuroCar Parts both have websites that recommend 10W-60 for M100 and the Shell app on my phone tells me that Helix Ultra Racing 10W-60 is their oil for the Elan M100. Seems SJ Sportscars go for 10W-60 too.

Changing the oil to 10W-60 from 10W-30 will make absolutely no difference to the engine when starting from cold as they are both 10W... which is the viscosity when cold. The W suffix means it's equivalent to a SAE 10 in Winter (about 0°C). The upper figure is the equivalent viscosity when the engine is hot (100°C) so the '60 oil' will remain thicker - or perhaps I should say 'less thin', than the '30 oil' when at 100°C.

Chris - I'm currently running on Petronas 5W/40 fully synthetic oil on my two, as recommended by my local Lotus (independent) specialist

No problems with this choice as far as I can discern

Over the years I have mostly used Mobil 1 0W40.

..But a lot of places recommend 10W60.

For normal road use 5 W or 10W and 30 or 40 depending on climate. 60 if you are tracking it or your engine is knackered.

I've gone several directions but ultimately settled on 5W-40 full synthetic for road driving. I like the idea of a thinner base oil, so it flows more easily when the engine is first started. the -40 high temp viscosity seems to be compatible. 0W-40 Mobil 1 gave low oil pressure at hot idle. I've settled on LubroMoly 5W-40 for the last couple of years. Honestly, I don't drive Smaug enough to worry about it these days. :(

Another vote for 5W40 synthetic here. Pressure is a little high when cold but it's perfect when warm.

I always hate making decisions about oil. The way some people talk, the engine will instantly seize / explode / dissolve if you so much as show it the wrong grade of oil but there are several threads on here discussing it at length with pretty much every grade above Extra Virgin having been tried by someone, and the worst outcome seems to be "it was so thin it found a leak". Halfords, I notice, have finally dropped the Elan from their in-store oil spec list - think they listed 0W60 - but you have to be pretty desperate to look there!

Here is the page from my techincal manual, just for interest's sake:

When I did my first oil change I used Mobil 1 10/60 fully synthetic but then suffered from noisy tappets on startup :(
It's now running on whatever Sportomotive have in their 45 gallon drum.
I will enquire...

I have enquired and it is......
10/60 Fully Synthetic :?
The tappets drain down as we know after a period of rest and if the engine is run can need to be at about 3000 revs for 10 or 15 minutes to fully pressurise them again
