1995 Elan S2 original stereo

Hi guys,

Only posted on here once but have been long term member of TLF. On sat picked up Elan S2 664 it’s seems pretty good well in fact really good. One the the first things that is driving me mad is the hideous aftermarket stereo which has graphics of I think water skiers, go figure it is also so fiddly I can’t actually operate it. So my question is what would have been the factory stereo options so I can go on a search.

Don’t worry it will be getting full mech check very soon and I am pleased to say it only leaks a very little bit. Currently going through the service history which is complete. There are going to be loads of questions coming your way so I will thank you all in advance

Hi Dan

I wondered how long before you'd pop in here :-D

Come on then - show LEC what you bought (and what you already have), stick your location in your profile, and welcome to the not so mad madhouse!

Hi Dan: Not all S2s came with a radio; mine certainly didn’t. It had a blanking plate fitted to start with, and a minidisc player by the time I bought it.

This thread has some details of period correct radios, although they are hens teeth and most people seem to fit more modern kit to get the benefits of Bluetooth etc. I have an Alpine whose colour you can change to match the dash lights, and FredJohn has a really swish flip-up screen with satnav as well.

Note that the original S2 stereo had a (black/brown) wire which connects to the alarm and earths the radio case. If you remove the earth (for example if you’re trying to steal the radio, the alarm will sound. My non-radio car had this cable earthed to a screw on the upper dash support bar, to fool the alarm into submission.

Hope this helps.
Jonathan

Mr Eds,

been on here a while but didn't have much to say as I didn't have the car. That has now been rectified :D I would happily post some pictures but it keeps telling the files are too large and being a very simple bloke I don't know how to deal with that.

I didn't know about that earth cable so that is good to know. This Stereo is more suitable to the Citroen Saxo brigade to be honest it is bloody hideous and as I say I cant even work it mainly because I cant see the buttons. I will check that thread out see if i can find anything suitable.

Hi Dan
My car came with a Clarion set up from the factory. It had a radio/cassette head with a link to a 6CD changer behind the drivers seat. The head unit had a face off feature for security so that it could be removed and put in a plastic case and carried around while away from the car. I cant imagine anyone actually did that!

Here's all the bits:

This is the label on the single din head unit:

The label on the CD Changer:

And the removable face:

In fact the set up worked quite well really when I ripped it out, but with one fatal flaw. The removable face piece has an LCD readout and in the end most of the pixels (? or whatever LCD elements are called) didn't work so operation was entirely by memory - and my memory isn't a strong suit! So you have no idea if you're adjusting volume, balance, fade, tuning or whatever. I understand that there are now places that will repair LCD screens/readouts so it may be poss to resurrect it. If its what you're after and you fancy having a go at fixing it you're welcome to it.

MPX awesome thank you. I hate auto changers though so I guessing try to find that model and see if I can get it to have an iPod connection. And thank for all the other answers I like it here :D
