LED Headlamp kit for the Elan?

Postby uk08462 » Mon 08.10.2018, 18:11

www.pnmparts.co.uk/lotus-esprit-led-headlamp-kit-9989

I saw this on the PNM Parts Facebook group, and in one of the comments James Hoare asks "Any plans for a m100 version?" to which they replied "yes we have discussed it. The lamps fit fine, we just need to draw up the stainless fitting kit and carrier plates for the Elan. The original fittings are prone to corrosion so a stainless kit is a good solution"

SOmething to think about!

After going out today and driving back in the dark down country lanes I'd be incredibly interested in these. I think my headlights would be brighter if I glued some mag lights to the bonnet :?

Are LED headlights any good?

My experience of LED lights around the house and as garage worklights is that they give out as much light as a glow-worm’s arsehole but blind you if you accidentally look directly at them.

Wow! your experience is a lot different to mine :D I think LED technology is improving all the time. I replaced one of my overhead double tube lights in the garage with LED and they are so much brighter (and lower energy consumption) than the standard original lighting on the other side of the garage.

After reading far too much about headlights yesterday I've not gone for LED's as it seems you need to also get LED lenses and I couldn't find them in the right size.

I've got these being delivered during the next week. If they don't make a difference I'll buy a set of LED's and compare.

John,

LED lights are directional by default. without a decent defuser they act exactly as you describe.
personally im a fan of LED strips for workshop/garage lighting. my shed has been using them for more than 2 years and after installing a PWM dimmer i feel like i always get the amount of light i need.

PS
i have fitted LED bulbs on all the front lights of the elan.

my experience is
sidelights are currently still fitted with modified LED strips. im very pleased with the look and brightness that they give (more than halogen)
i have also fitted on main and full beam bulbs however, the ones i fitted were pretty bad by comparison with the stnadard halogen.

I have fitted yellow LED strips as the indicators. they looked ok. and where equally as bright as the original indicator bulbs, HOWEVER the reduced resistance in the circuit triggered the fast flashing behaviour. which made me postpone the mod for later (3 years and still havent gone back to fix it)

Elan kit available. Anybody tried this? At around £400 all in it seems pricey but should improve safety at night.

This is not normal, mine is rather all right.
Do you have the original headlamps?
The Durite replacement won't direct the beam properly, I had to adjust the bulb holder to put the bulb in the parabola focus.
I have already written a few lines on that subject there:
https://forum.lotuselancentral.com/view ... 75#p327860
https://forum.lotuselancentral.com/view ... 75#p327880

In a nutshell, since I adjusted the bulb holder I have 6.5 times more light in a nice central hot spot than the brightest point in the corona before.
The hotspot pattern is not perfect, but very decent.

PS: as for the LED beams, some people are happy with them on the Esprit variant (I think they came from PNM too, but I am not sure).
edit: actually it's not the PNM variant:

Has anyone actually purchased (and is using) the PNM LED headlamp conversion? Having just priced up a new set of headlamps and mounting rings etc from SJs, which comes out at £466, the PNM solution suddenly seems good value at £395. Even though it’s not strictly original.

Rob Walker on Facebook, M100 Owners & enthusiasts, recently posted he had them fitted by PNM. A photo in the post. He may be on here, I don't know!
