I've recently installed a VSD Basis HUD speedo in the Elan.
This was really easy to do, just a case of scotch clipping four wires into the upper most connector at the back of the instrument cluster.
It took me about two hours to get it hooked up, half of which was finding, checking, and re-checking which wires I had to connect to (I didn't fancy getting that wrong).
Calibration is a two man job as it requires setting a baseline while doing 40mph.
The things I would suggest for anyone going down this route are just two observations really, it will be distracting if you put it in direct line of sight, and is likely to land you in trouble, the second is to make sure it projects onto a swept part of the windscreen as rain droplets will cause it to glare.
Although it comes with some reflective patches to apply to the windscreen, I have found that in all but direct sunlight the display is visible without the patches.
I have positioned mine in the recess to the right hand side of the dashboard, and this projects to the right of my line of sight at just below half way up the windscreen, so it does require a movement to be able to see it, however the road ahead is always in your peripheral vision.
As far as accuracy goes, I have the 160mph Lockwood dials and 16" wheels, and the HUD is within 1-2mph of the gauge, up to 120mph. I've not done any vs. Sat Nav comparisons, but I believe Sy has compared the Lockwoods + 16" to Sat Nav and found them to be within 1-2mph to ~120.
Now I have run mine for a few weeks, I'd not be without it, although the only fault (more annoyance) is that on sharp right turns, at night on unlit roads, the display partly obscures my line of sight into the turn. This could be corrected by re-positioning the display, but for me the benefits of it's current position outweigh this drawback.
I have attached some pictures of the install, on the HUD picture the 0mph reading can be seen, but looks a lot fainter in the photo than it actually is to see it in the car.
Many thanks to Algirdas for his help in acquiring the display!
