New Large Bore Exhaust by PECO for S1 Elans with no flat bit

As an alternative to Peco (Son of Peco), I have contacted Piper Cams and Exhausts and explained our dilemma. The response was

'I am afriad that we do not offer any exhausts for that car at the moment. We could develop this for you but would need a car here in order to do the development on.

As far as price goes i would need to see a car here in our workshop to do the costings on. Then I can put a price to you and your members. My only concern is that we are not the cheapest exhaust manufacturer around, although we are the best quality, and as you were buying from Peco I guess your members are used to cheap prices. But again, until I see the car and exhaust to get an idea of whats involved I wont be able to offer a quote.'

Piper are located in Folkestone, Kent CT19 6PQ -I'm located in Wales -any volunteers - so that we can get a quotation?

Anyway, according to the LEC map it's Oliver, but he's only got a Norma so won't be 100% the same, but probably good enough to get an estimate.

what a brilliant idea the map link is. a link to the database would be especially when someone is looking, for example, for members in Maidstone to drop into Piper exhausts. How can i get imy info on it ?

Hey, just a thought but if Pico would have had this frenzy of potential buyers previously..perhaps they would have not gone Bust!!!

plus I think it's a bit embarassing for the forum as a whole..it seems to be that everyone is 'circling ready to swoop in to try and pick at the bones!!'

1. The Elan community, however much the demand for exhausts, would not keep Peco afloat, or for that matter any other manufacturer of any part.
2. If there will be an ongoing supply of Elan exhausts, then no doubt this list will fall apart quickly - it was put together because of a "get it while you can" opportunity.
3. Why should we out a warped sense of compassion or dignity idly stand back and let someone else profit out of their demise? These exhausts would eventually end up on our cars either way... why line someone else's pocket along the way?

I think that you're being a bit of a bell-end, to be honest.

You were lucky enough to get the last available exhaust and now feel able to smugly preach to the rest of us, whose exhausts failed a few days later, or who have the foresight to know that we'll need an exhaust soon.

You may notice that the interest in getting Peco exhausts started before we knew that the bug.gers had gone bust.

Once their fate was known (and knowing that the online store had had some availability before the collapse) people naturally wanted to get hold of a good, highly regarded exhaust system before those stocks simply disappeared.

And had you not been one week luckier than the rest of us with your timing, are you saying that (needing an exhaust) you would not have wanted to buy one?

It's just that Pico Dave has possibly lost his job here and he has been a helpful contributor to this forum and he owns an elan himself have no doubt that through his efforts alone this exhaust became available to everyone. I just though a bit of respect for a fellow Forum member was due.

Perhaps a more subtle approach, and a PM to Dave might have got us better results though!! it is possible that he would know how to have secured any stock better than anyone ...anyone that we know anyway!

As you say, it's unlikley that this was ever a money spinner for Pico.

As for other rude comments on here, I had ordered my pico prior to hearing about the company going bust.

1) Several of those on the list were on the list because they'd been trying to buy before Peco went to the wall. The only difference between them and you, Mikey, is a couple of days.

2) On 30 June, after their end was reported, I asked: "Should we approach the receiver to buy the stock of 17 that Cybox had left before the collapse, as a Group buy?"

GeoffSmith, (that well-known 'circling vulture') responded "That had crossed my mind as a Kitty swelling activity - it will be interesting to see if Cybox start trading again though."

I don't see this as being anything to be embarrassed or apologetic about.

No disrespect whatever was meant to Dave Jones - many of us had been trying to contact him by phone and e-mail for weeks before the Peco collapse.

While I apologise for using profane language (especially if you were offended by it) I would still stand by my criticism - I think that your disdain for, and criticism of, those of us who wanted to try and get hold of any remaining stock (which you found "Embarassing for the forum as a whole" and which you likened to "Circling ready to swoop in to try and pick at the bones!!") was smug and rather supercilious and was actually far more offensive than a gentle suggestion that one person was being "a bit of a bell end" for insulting many fellow board members.

My intent was to be a bit light-hearted and jokey, rather than being cold and clinical and angry, however.

Your criticism applied to Geoffsmith and 15 of your fellow forum members. Aren't we all supposed to be Elan enthusiasts, with a common bond in that enthusiasm? Bad news indeed. Don't forget that Dave Jones was a fellow Elan owner and thoroughly decent bloke. Maybe I pushed them too hard on the discount.

Mikey, I think Peco made very little on the Elan exhausts and as Ailwyn says, not enough to keep them afloat and I too am sorry to see the loss of any UK engineering companies. My only motive was to try and make sure that any Elan exhausts were secured for LEC rather than end up with someone (unlike David Jones) who has no interest in the marque. Oh and there were a lot of behind the scenes attempts to contact David, but they were totally unsuccessful.

Anyway, there's no need for people to get upset or take what might appear to be criticism the wrong way. I certainly haven't.

Now that this thread has calmed down........some of us actually need an exhaust system.

Peco has advised that they will restart supply on 11 August. There has been no confirmation of price or availability.

Piper Exhausts have indicated their interest in providing a similar exhaust system and are aware of the price previously charged by Peco. We need a car to get a quotation that will be available to LEC Members.

This thread indicated the demand for exhaust systems some weeks ago. If those listed can confirm their need, this Forum can use that demand to negotiate a group buy. Obviously, an order for 15+ systems would be attractive to any supplier and hopefully secure a discounted price.
