Outboard drive shaft boot

Postby valimar on Sun 17.01.2010, 19:43

Hi All,
My right side outboard boot is cracked loosing a lot of grease! Has any of you experience how to replace the old boot, and what parts have to be removed or loosen up?
Is on the site some write up about it?
Some help will be most appreciated.

Thanks Dave for the clear explanation! Besides the Caddy Van I found somewhere in the site that a Renault boot (part. 8671002726) also fits perfectly!

I considered doing this, but bottled it, a combination of the hub nut tightened to in excess of 130 odd foot pounds, and not having the correct size socket, and having to mess around grinding bits off the ball joint splitter seemed too much of a fag - in the end I took it round to my local Hi-Q and £90 later it was all sorted.

Apparently the CV joint was also siezed on.

A Company called Bailcast also do a very stretchy boot which will save you taking the CV joint off

Might also be worth getting new ball joint dust cover/boots replaced at the same time - especially if you are using a fork-type splitter - Massey-ferguson TRE boots fit like a glove IIRC - do a word search on LEC for Ferguson.

Good luck

I quite agree with you it’s a messy job and for £ 90 I would not bother to do it myself! The question is I don’t trust car mechanics down here in the Algarve… About the hub nut I don’t expect any problems: I have a good compressor and impact wrench and I will manage! My car has less than 50.000 miles and all boots look in good shape except the one on the right side that has a cut by the metal clamp. I will also use a good ball joint separator (not a fork type).

You might want to contact Bailcast. I like their Duraboot. The prices posted below are in US$ from last time I bought them many years back.

Also make sure to hire a VERY STRONG PERSON to stretch the boot over the cone - very difficult when we did it here. Ended up finding an off-duty US Marine to do the job - arms like Popeye! If I have to do another one, I'm buying a pneumatic boot-stretcher instead of using the cone-and-spray method.

Ok Dave, I did everything till the vice clamping but the CV joint will not come out! Do I have to remove a circlip before pushing the CV out of the shaft or just give some blows on it with a fiber hammer?
Some help would be appreciate!

Valimar,

You can't see, or get to the circlip until the CV joint has been removed - it is an internal fixing - it should knock or lever off, it's just a matter of getting it over the circlip.

Some pictures on here

Stevieshag did this job - perhaps you could PM him. IIRC he had a trumpet shaped tool to help stretch the boot over the joint. Wierdly even the small end will stretch over the whole joint ..

Undoing the hub nut isn't actually so bad, I put a strong long bolt into the space in the ventilated disc and rotated the hub until the bolt locked against the brake caliper, breaker bar with scaffold extention and heave! Undo the lower balljoint nut, bang the hub carrier with a 2lb club hammer until the taper parts, I didn't require a balljoint splitter tool on either side. Remove drive shaft from hub, release inner CV boot and gently pull to remove the driveshaft with half the inner joint attached, but ensure you don't drop any of the bearings. Put the shaft in a large vice and the outer CV can then easily be knocked off. If the outer boots are worn, it's sensible to replace the inner ones while it's all apart. I got a full set of 4 boot kits from SJ's for £60 inc delivery.
