squealing cooling fans

Postby ppete100 » Mon 26.03.2012, 21:28

cooling fans started making a squealing noise lately, is there anyway to lubricate them or are they on their way out? :?

Hi, I noticed your question as I have a similar issue.
Did you work out a solution?
Thanks

Drill a very small hole in the tit on the backplate and syringe a couple of drops of thin oil in to lubricate the bearing.

And after you've done that, and hopefully lost the squeak, remember to let your engine get hot and check that both fans kick in when the needle on the temp gauge is approx. at the 3/4 mark

Been busy doing Luther things, but got round to looking at this issue today, and to my surprise there was already a drilled hole in the tit of the casing....good because it's easy for me to just add the oil, the bad thing is that it was a problem prior to me getting the car!
Fingers crossed it will work

Yes, be patient. give it a couple more drops of light oil and work it by shorting the sender wire.

Old fans are Renault OEM or Kenlowe and balanced, new generic fans are Chinese and not balanced.

May have been balanced at one time, but Smaug vibrates like a, well, vibrator, when the fans come on. After 20 years of use, I wonder if the balance has gone out the window.

Federal fans are completely different from UK/ROW cars. The Fed fans are larger and all plastic.

From what I read, the plastic fan rarely has bearing issues and the outer metal case of the UK/ROW version will disintegrate in a few years while the plastic lasts a long time.

Doug: I would look at the fans closely to see if a blade has broken or picked up some road trash/tar which would throw it out of balance.

The fans are mounted to the SIR/radiator support using a grommet and a shouldered washer (washer with a distance tube attached) so they are never mounted directly to the radiator support system. Maybe one of the mounts has failed?...

Plastic fans also used on S2 ( mine has one of each) are made by Kenlowe and the blades are not trimmed like the Chinese fans, and are balanced using small steel clips.

I have finally made a decision and bought the fan from SJ. Plastic with metal plates for fitment purposes. Get it next week and will be fitting it asap.
Thanks for the help buys

Just received my cooling fan from SJ and to my surprise it's the original OEM part! Happy days!

Fan changed yesterday and all is well.
Checked the old fan off the car and as I expected the bearings were knackered and the fan when rotated was far from smooth.
Surprised it was still able to operate to be honest!
Here's to trouble free driving (for at least the summer!)
