Second opinion...

Postby NigeElan » Mon 23.07.2018, 12:50

Anyone based on the North East (near Darlington)? I’m looking for a garage that understands M100 set up? And / or other owners nearby? The car doesn’t feel right (it’s been off the road a few years, but MOT’d last week). I want to talk through the car with someone with some applicable knowledge… I had a lot of work done a few years ago on the front suspension (at a Lotus specialist further south), but the car has never felt the same since, so looking for a second opinion!?

Maybe not as close as you would like, but Chris Foulds in Huddersfield always seems to be highly regarded.

Can't help you... but an absolute outside guess my tealeaves say the dampers are adjustable and they are set too stiff.

Let us know how you get on!

Thanks for your responses. Suspension does feel stiffer, I’ll check it out.
I now have an intermittent clunking/clicking noise on braking (only passed MOT on Friday!).

Even though the click could just be the pads sliding in the calipers, PLEASE jack it up (follow the owner's manual) and remove each wheel and after supporting the car safely make sure the calipers are bolted tightly to the suspension. I don't think I can identify a more scary situation than to have a caliper detach itself while you are trying to stop. Obviously, you will also be checking the wheels are bolted on correctly when you do this since a loose wheel will also make a clunk when braking.

The torque to use is in the service manual. If you don't have it yet, it is available from the manuals page noted in my signature below or you can use this link to get a copy: http://www.lotusm100.com/manuals/Elan-M ... ual-v6.pdf

While you looking around the calipers, look at all the other hardware to make sure nothing has loosened over time since the other work was done.

+1 what John said. Wheels off and check.

When braking you are going from positive load to negative load so could be a bolt that needs tightening or a ball joint past its best.

Many years ago I had a similar thing. When it eventually occurred to me that I needed to check, I discovered straight away that the wheel bolts weren't tight.

Right, been on the ramp, local mechanic tugged and prized suspension, had a look at brakes. Nothing significant found (only slight play in antiroll bar link, but I cant see how that would emanate from this part?). Its going in next week to have a more detailed inspection (tighten all bolts etc…). Could there be loose bolt on chassis part? I’m not mechanical, but trying to think of the options?

A good few years ago a continental member found loose bolts on the front suspension raft mounting plate and a cracked plate that had to be welded. I thought it was delta, but can’t find it in his posts. Part 45 on the diagram below.

Probably bog-all to do with your problem, but you did ask.

Try Colin at Revline, Whitley Bay. Colin has had an M100 for many years and also worked on a few in his time
