Metal plating specialists

Postby chrisP » Mon 26.11.2012, 18:38

Could anyone recommend a metal plating specialist in the UK, (In Hertfordshire or close by would be even better). I want to have various metal brackets from my car cleaned and replated in the gold factory finish, while it is taken apart for a winter refresh and repaint.

Thanks
Chris

Sorry for not replying to you PM Chris. I used Avon Electro Plating in W-S-M. They quoted me £20 for the radiator brackets over the phone but charged a very reasonable £40 for everything below:

Hi Geoff
Thanks for the information, did they clean/shotblast the parts, before plating as well, or did you do that yourself?
Cheers

They stripped and cleaned everything. If I'd known in advance, I would have removed the paint on the rad bracket with paint stripper as they took weeks over that - one problem of giving them a small job at low cost I guess.

For the benefit of ConfusedOfCrudwell, there is also S&T in Yate. They were more expensive just for the radiator bracket but if I had ever got my roll hoops plated, I would probably have used them.

Not many parts were in the "gold factory finish" which is "Zinc and Yellow" when you ask a plater.

Depending where you are in Hertfordshire.

RCJ Metal Finishers who I have used several times - good results but they can be slow
and there are 2 in Arlsley one has a good reputation

3 things with any platers.
1. Take a list and photos of the parts
2. The finish achieved is only as good as the base article so if you take in clean de-rusted parts you are likely to get better results. They will go through paint stripping and derust and several cleaning processes, but if they are covered in cack it is unlikley to completely clean the corners. Previously plated parts go through an acid strip process. rust will show up dull as the surface is pitted.
3. Ask how much and particularly when. RCJ for example are a big commercial platers so if they are busy you will wait.

The grey "paint" is an epoxy coating a lot of paint strippers wont touch it.

Simon: Confused of Crudwell saw the same photo posted on Facebook earlier this week and will have a lower rad bracket to plate or coat later this spring.

Geoff: thanks for the info
