Wipers staying on

Postby Judgeman6691 » Thu 29.04.2021, 02:32

A big howdy from Texas!

I was just gifted a 1991 Lotus Elam M100 Turbo from my uncle who owned it the last 20 years and it has sat in the garage for about 10 of those years. I am slowly but surely cleaning up and restoring it back to its proper state. I am in awe of the infinite knowledge I have seen expelled on these forums as they have helped me fix common" issues like the worn headlamp gears, snapped butterfly clips in the regulator and the parts interchange info that has been complied; these forums are great and so helpful!

Any how, enough of my rambling , to the issue at hand:
The wipers seem to be stuck on despite the wiper stalk being on the off position. When the car is in the accessory position, the wipers will start (seems to be the low setting). I am wondering if there is maybe a magic fix or common issue that someone knows of with these wipers. I read in the service manual and it stated that if there is a nearby electrical issue, the headlamp motors can go off; the driver side headlamp motor is initiating and I know the wiper electronics are in the vicinity so perhaps there is an electrical issue with the wiper that is tripping off the headlamp motor as well.

Many thanks!

Welcome!
The electrics for the wipers are simple switch relay/module and motor. See electrical manual or wiki for circuit diagram and location.

About the only things that can go wrong are the module and wiring at the switch so diagnosis should be straight forward.

I don't recall any issues but there is quite a lot written about the module part cross reference and "upgrade" to variable delay. Which may be useful.

Thank you Simon! I'll reference the diagram and take a look at the wiring and the fuse/relays.

If you have a problem with the wiper switch or relay it may be opportune to upgrade to a variable delay rather than the one preset delay ... assuming these GM bits are available in Texas forum.lotuselancentral.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=24701#p333117

All you need to get a variable intermittent wipe is a different relay. There is no real need to find the stalk switches.

Go to a breakers for a VW Golf MK IV wiper relay, or buy a new one. Type 99 instead of the type 19 on the Elan. As in the WikiLEC.

Like others would guess your issue is the relay. Relatively easy to access and change, at least on a RHD car!
