Seat diaphragm clips on federal elan

Postby tomatcbl » Sun 14.08.2016, 00:18

Three of the clips that hold the seat diaphragm to the frame on the door side of the drivers seat have snapped and I am sitting at an uncomfortable angle. I like to think it is simply that they have worn out over 25 years - my wife suggests it may have something to do with the fact that my waistline is not what is was in 1991, but I don't see the correlation.

Regardless any idea of where I can source a new set of seat diaphragm clips (and possible a new diaphragm)?

Many thanks

Some years back I used some C shaped clips off and old sunbed to fix mine. Heavier and galvanised, too. :)

The originals are no longer available. SJ 's sell a replacement for 70 p each - A100U6059S - which is slightly thicker and a less complex shape. I have them fitted and they work fine, but you could probably find something locally - as you can see it's not a complex design.

If you put 'hog rings' into ebay you will get all sizes and thicknesses - a pack of 10 delivered for 99p.

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

Probably need the hog ring tool to install them properly though. Could use a pair of pliers but its a lot more work.

A 'proper' tool makes it a whole lot easier, but i have managed with 2 pairs of pliers (if it's only for a few clips).

Failing that, if you have a furniture re-upholsterer close to you I'm sure that he'd (or she'd!) supply and fit them for low money.

Thanks for all the feedback. In the end I solved it with S hooks bent to shape similar to the picture of the SJ replacements in a vice. Still have a tear in the diaphragm, but the replacement hooks are a noticeable improvement in comfort and posture.
