water in footwells

Postby jc_uk » Sat 21.11.2020, 12:58

Hi all,

Help appreciated please.

My Elan is now parked outside and is getting quite a lot of water in the foot wells.
Car seats are keeping dry.
Hood and windows seem to be well sealed and no leaking when driving in rain.
Bit of water, but not much on sill covers when doors open after rain.....

Any ideas on where the water is coming through from and how i can stop it coming in?

Any pointers to other forum posts/fixes that may help?

(Trying to get it dried out and get the waterproof cover on.......)

Many thanks

Hi JC,

If your door glass seals aren't contacting the glass properly then water can get into the doors and make its way down to drip onto the carpet from the door cards. At least that's what happened on mine. I have the PNM replacement seals which I had to move inwards by 2mm to make a good seal to the glass, and that was after adjusting the runners so the glass was in good contact with the A and B pillar seals.
Also check where that seal contacts the wing mirror post as most cars now have replacement seals which have a different profile to the Lotus ones.

If you haven't seen it yet there's a "Water Ingress" addendum in section BK of the service manual V6.

Hi,

Yes I have the PNM replacement seals and they look to be fitted with a good seal to the glass.

Something else I've noticed is the sealant (sikaflex?) at the bottom edge of the windscreen is peeling away and will need reapplying soon.....
Could that be a route in for the water?

I'll check the BK of the service manual V6.....

The car has been garaged for a long time and now lives in the open for now....

(When first purchased back in 1992, it was parked outside all the time and never had any issues with wet carpets.......)

So the change could be the PNM replacement seals or the new hood, or the new seals......

Thanks

Also check the foam connector on the fresh air inlet for the heating. It lets water in somehow!
You'll find it hidden under the passenger(UK) wheel arch liner.
They eventualy rot into dust. An old inner tube is the best replacement.

Hi again,

Looking at the car this weekend there are gaps between the PNM replacement glass seals and the door end seal.......

So next task is track down a solution for that, as I understand the end of door seals are no longer available.

Also need to look at the fresh air inlet for the heating....

Many thanks
