Okay, I'm geographically in a southern state, and yes it gets to 100f plus in the summer, and I know the sun is killing my red (rapidly becoming pink and scaley) car...
BUT!!! Why on earth would I want to carpet my dashboard???
I just don't get it, must be an American thing...

Custom Dashboard Covers

Dear All:
OK, I'll come clean and tell everyone that I popped for a velour dashmat the other day. I know that having a dashboard cover is a right of passage to membership in the American Association of Retired Persons. I got one only after seeing how much work there is in keeping my 2004 BMW's dash from drying out. And this on a car that is garaged and parked during the day in covered parking. Bear in mind that a dashboard that is only two years old has a step up on longevity than one that is 15 years old. Especially one that has spent all of her 15 years baking in California and Florida sunshine. I still intend on getting a shower cape, though I will be using it to keep out sunlight rather than rain.
I live at altitude (5,000 feet) and the UV rays up here are murder on all things rubber and plastic. The dry climate may be good at keeping rust from forming, but it sucks the life out of leather, rubber and plastic on a car. Plus, there also develops this greenhouse effect of even keeping the car in the sunlight for a short time. My Elan's dashboard is in pretty good shape and I would like to try and rejuvenate it a bit through frequent applications of protectant and keeping it covered. For example, I just have a little bit of the cover pulling away from the area around the dashboard vents.
I did not get a bling, bling one as shown in this thread. I got a much simpler one and it is held in place with three velcro strips. I'll let you know what I think of it over time.
If it does not work out, I can always take the material and make a sport coat. Now that would be bling, bling!
