dash falling apart

my dash seems to be falling apart..

anyone has encountered this before?

i saw that there are 2 screws along the black outer cover, but there seems to be no clips that the screws should be turned into....

i tried to search the forum but did not come across anyone with such a problem

any clues?? tks

Mine looks the same , seems to get worse in the winter and closes up in the summer preffers the sun like me

Its been covered a couple of times on here but i couldnt find the post. Its the mounting brackets coming unglued from the dash, fairly common and not that difficult to fix but you do have to remove the dash and fascia panels to reglue or fabricate the new brackets. go here: viewtopic.php?f=39&t=15187#p201610
and the bottom picture shows the where the two top brackets should be (on mine one was missing) they look like they have come loose on yours.

@ lansledj - mine was slowly coming off whilst the engine was being rebuilt. it got worse over the weeks.

@ esprit888 - tks for the link. probably will need to fabricate something to make it hold better.

Be sure to test the glue you are going to use, most don't stick well. I wound up
using a glue made for holding fenders on.

I used a clear two part epoxy available from most hardware stores.

Mine too is sagging Pecks, on one side where there is no clip, but as mentioned but many others lots of brown gooey stuff inside!! On a slightly different note, does anyone know if the plastic instrument binacle surrounds are available anywhere as mine is cracked and spilt by way of the RH screw hole? I've reglued it for now but it won't be a long term fix.

I can't say about the binnacle however I bought the last new instrument cluster from Dave Bean Engineering. I hasn't arrived yet but I hope to have the car running in time for a trip to the local British car club Christmas club.

the glue is very soft to the touch. i don't know if it is because of the local weather or not, but i have removed all mounting brackets and will re-attach them using epoxy or such...

hmm... from looking at racerstev and esprit888 pics it seems that i have more than 2 brackets missing...

and the brackets also seems to be in different places for the UK and US elan

Something I found after doing my dash that may help you. A thin feeler gauge (.015" or so)
makes a great tool to spread the epoxy.

On my thread I am missing 3 mounts, 2 of 3 at the very top of the dash and one that holds
the left lower corner in place.

looks like you are missing some more (the top centre for sure)

yep, upon closer look i realised the top centre bracket is also missing. that is an easy fix, but the others (these 2 .... http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q20/ ... 0284-2.jpg) will be a little tough as i will have to fabricate something of the correct length.
will have to do a measurement before anything can be done..hopefully will be able to sort them out this weekend

Here's the one that sits on the lower edge to the left of the column when viewed from the front.
material is steel 1mm thick and plated

the center one is a right angle bracket with a captive nut in it M4

next ones a bit more tricky, the one that sits to the right of the gauges viewed from the front as it is a round standoff 28mm tall

On my dash there is not one fitted right hand side of instrument cluster viewed from the front where you have an arrow on your picture and no sign of one ever having been there.

hi bob, from what i see from the service manual, the other arrow i assume to be 'B' as per below diagram..coorect me if i'm wrong

ok, i've tried to match the brackets as per the service manual, and it seems i'm missing 'B' (which seems to be a fork) and 'D', as well as the one in at the top in the middle just above the instrument binnacle..

am i right??

The one I have does not have a bracket in B and looking at it closely, there does not appear to have been one fitted, so not able to help with that one.
