Steering wheel fitment

Got this steering wheel (Momo?) included when I bought my S2 although it wasn't fitted. I assume I either need to replace the Nardi boss with a Momo one or get an adaptor and shroud to fit it. What I'm not sure about is how the horn will work.

I take it I attach the wire to one connector but how do I ensure the return circuit? Or am I being dumb and I just bolt on to the adaptor/new boss?

Hi all, sorry to jump in in the middle but I noticed that many of you are using nice momo steering wheels. I recently bought a brand new '"red" highlight Momo Pilota steering wheel but I could not find the right Boss kit adapter. My Elan is red and both the seats has been re-upholstered in black leather with red stitching, hence I would really love to fit the Pilota to complete the look. My Elan is UK RHDrive version 1990 Turbe SE. Could somebody advice where and which model Momo or OEM adapter I can use. Thanks !

As much as I want to add Elise airbag wheel to my car, the design of S2 Elise wheel will look out of place with our Elan interior.

I think it would look better than the GM p.o.s. in place now... What would be involved if you had an Elise airbag wheel to put into an M100?

I really want to do this swap. But... the color is certainly wrong. I'm wondering if the small amount of leather on the Elise wheel could easily be dyed to match better - the Elise wheel is black with silver trim, the Elan interior is gray:

Just a comment, that is a strange photo, I see the top is up but know one is in the car. Did you crawl behind the seats to take that picture, maybe in the storage area

Yes but the fascia is all black as is the instrument cluster. I don't think it will look that bad. There are lots of folks in the UK who have installed new steering wheels that are black (the UK version didn't have an airbag making it easier to swap the steering wheel). You could always paint the aluminum a different colour.

Ok, there are 2 complete Elise airbag steering wheels (hard to believe since it took me 6 months to find a good used one without the airbag) on eBay as we speak. Here and here.

These look like they can be had for a very good price. But, here's what you have to look out for. First, you want to make sure they are coming with the plastic rotary connector on the back. This part, while being a GM part and available from Lotus, is stupidly expensive (I do have 2 extra's though ). Second, and this is the hard part, you need the hub adaptor. This is NOT avaiable from Lotus as a seperate part and while a used connector can sometimes be found, the hub adaptor is virtually impossible to find.

If you can't get a hub apadtor then there are some possible options. My quick looks indicate to me that the splines on the Elise hub adaptor will not match up to the steering column in the Elan although I've not yet verified that. So, the Elise hub may, in the end, be useless anyway That means getting a custom made hub, modifying the Elise hub (not likely possible) or adapting the Elan hub to the back of the Elise wheel are all possible ways to overcome this challenge. This is assuming the airbag connectors are compatible or can be made to be compatible.

I mention all this only because some folks (like me) would really like to fit the Elise airbag wheel to the Elan. Its not a direct transplant to be sure but i may be possible. So, if you spend the money on one of these do so knowing that it may end up being a waste (although I'm betting something can be done to make it all work).

After looking over the first auction I listed I can see form the additonal pics that it does not include the contact ring or hub adaptor. I would bet that the second one is the same but someone could ask the seller about it or have them post a pic of the back of the steering wheel.

Can anyone speak to the hub adaptor issue? did anyone ever talk to anyone who has done this installation? what did they do? I'd love to do this--I'm with tweet--once you've been in a smashup and an airbag has kept you from being damaged it's hard to drive without one.

Randy's (Lotos) pictures above are of the Elise wheel just sitting in the proper position, but not actually installed. Installation is apparently tricky, at best. I don't like the looks of the GM wheel, but I also don't think the Elise airbag wheel really fits the interior. Personal taste. I was about to attemp a Corvette wheel a while back, but didn't get around to it, and didn't have the money to spare. It appeared to have the standard GM stuff, which on the back of the wheel, looked like all the mounting stuff would line up, so if the splines did too, it might be easy. It was a much more attractive wheel than the one we have.

Keep in mind that the steering column is not a typical GM part. Its an Isuzu part. So, its unlikely that a GM wheel will just pop on. I don't even think the Esprit wheel, which is identical to the Elan wheel, will simply pop on. The hub's are different even if the wheels are the same.

Hmmm, Oh! I just happen to have the Elise wheel (non SIR) with the adaptor that i am going to fit to mine so did i make a bad buy? (see below) My BIG question is, after fitting a custom Raid SIR wheel to my Esprit, which had the same Pontiac airbag wheel as the M100, an in-line resistor was required to stop the air bag light from staying on. Has anyone fitted an alternative non SIR wheel to a Fed or Canadian car and had issues with the SIR light ? or does it go out and stay out for good (unlike the Esprit!)
