well 5 hours later and theyre in the gauges ...just got to put the whole thing back together now!!!!......
not sure how long it took you guys but I basically ended up dismantling everything.....could get my hands in at anything so took everything off!!!!
ah well......more fun tomorrow!!!....
think Ive bent the pin for the boost gauge a bit too.....rotates on a bit of a funny axis now......only minute but I know its there!!!!....
while I here anyone know how to remove the switch blanks???....
cant feel anything obvious!!!

switch blanks --> there are more on the Federal car than yours but they are the same part

get a small flat screwdriver, cover the tip with a thin cloth (so as not to scratch anything) and use it to pry from the top or bottom edge and it should pop right out ! It's just a plastic blank that snaps in place.

well got it all in.......finished it off in an hour tonight......easier to put back together than it was to take apart.....
thing is I left it over night with all the connections off....came to start it! battery dead....any thoughts why? or shouldnt I have left is disassembled!!! with the battery still attatched....

pps need to replace a couple of bulbs too......ant sugestions...all looking a bit beige at the moment!!!!!

My first reaction G was that you'd left a wire grounded, but knowing that you're changing steering column stalks too I think there's more chance that you've left something inadvertantly turned on overnight.

Left mine disconnected all night G, & never had a problem, like Sy said, probably something to do with column stalk ?

I think I like em....but as Ive got to take the gauges etc out again anyway, as I appear to have broke the bulbs for the oil and battery, I can change em back no problem....

G, they look good, but then i'm biased !. Did you break the bulbs, or the holders ?, because if the holders, i couldn't find anywhere that stocked the same. Got some that fitted, just wern't the same ?

luckily its the bulbs......pulled them out and you could see the filament broken....
doh but then its not as bigger doh as your bulb holders......

like the new stalks elanman.Where'd you get them?Might be up for some if you don't mind me jumping on the bandwagon.Now if i could just work out how to fit those whitedials!& don't tell me it's straight forward,i'm bound to sod it up.You could fill old trafford with stuff i don't know about everything handy, so to speak.

the stalk are off ebay.......£20 IIRC.......
they are attatched to the remnant of the original stalk aledgedly.....
the instructions they come with state taking a hacksaw an chopping the end of your stalk off.....
I went on ebay and got some stalks from an astra or cavalier and butchered them....it was also easy to do with them off the car and also meant that if i did cock up then it wouldnt have mattered......
as for the white dials......replaced the bulbs today.....
got stripping then sorting then replacing the dash/dials/cowel/steering wheel thing down to under and hour now.......well Ive had it off 3 times in 2 days....oooh er missus!!!!!

thanks elanman & paul. think i'll buy off the elise sight.like the satin finish.question is will they fit ok?don't really want to buy two lots.elanman i have the intelectual capacity of a squashed apricot.can you explain again how you did it.Paul it's not my fingers that are the problem it's my total lack of competence & common sense & i've seen your fingers god it can't have been easy.anyway if i keep changing stuff on the car at this rate i'll have a completely new car by next christmas

they say youre supposed to do it in situ (the stalks I mean!!)
I'd say take em out its dead easy!!!!....
take the steering wheel off.....then the cowl or shroud thing round the steering column and they just clip out.......
when you have them out you'll notice a change in the root of the stalks where it changes from hollow to solid.....theres like a flange piece in between IIRC.....anyway you saw the stalk off at this point.....then take the new stalk (not forgetting to put the rubber concertina thing onto the new stalk) slide it over the stub thats left and then tighten up the screws and da dah!!! tiz done....then its just a case of clipping the new stalks in and fitting the cowl and then the wheel....done.....bobs your uncle and fanny's yer aunt
I added a load of araldite to make sure it wasnt going anywhere!!!!

we are a bit off topic but what the hell.my god sounds like i might be able to actually do that elanman.thanks for info.i'm ordering tham right now by god.it's strange i'd been thinking for a while how nice some alloy stalks might look.

I think it was a big order so that lockwood could get their 'patterns' sorted other wise it'd have been very expensive for one person........and I think that they are now available from lockwood although they may be more expensive than the group buy.......
just give lockwood a ring and see......unless paul got some spares!!!!...
