According to the Radio 4 programme I was listening to last week it comes from Polari (g-a-y slang)[hyphens needed as the word "gray" automatically changes to gray when I preview my text] and was used to dismissively refer to heterosexual people. Believed to be an abreviation of " Not Available For F**king". It was introduced as a less offensive expletive verb ("naff off") in the '70s UK television show, Porridge. "Naff off!" was also famously used by Princess Anne in 1982...

Up to now I thought all those hours, I spend travelling for work listening to Daytime Radio were wasted!
