Door locks firing independently

Ever since I bought the car the door locks would occasionally lock without warning (or me asking). It has rarely been a problem as I tend to only use the car with the hood down (November trip from Oxford to Peterborough through the motorway network been one of the daftest!), however it is likely to catch me out at some point.

Recent 'jiggling' with some wires under the steering column seemed to trigger the doors to lock and unlock so I wondered if i have got a short or loose connection somewhere in the loom through the door jamb. Anyone have any useful suggestions?

The alarm had been disconnected before I bought the car and I wondered if that had anything to do with it. I'm also intending to replace the alarm and use a new item with remote opening option.

It'll probably be a symptom of the disconnected alarm system. Check out the wiring diagrams in the manuals - you can trace the door lock circuits and see if you can find a dodgy connection, probably an old alarm splice not properly reconnected.
If you get a good installer to fit your new alarm, he'll be able to tear out the remnants of the old system and fix the wiring. When I had my new TOAD unit installed I was amazed, the old alarm kit and wires filled the passenger footwell nearly level with the seat! There were remnants of at least two old systems in there, neither fully working, and all sorts of dodgy splices. Much better now
