Door carpet replacement

So I have made these up from ply and vinyl. Matches the elbow resesss I recovered.




I read a thread on here where it was suggested that you could put the door panel screws through the carpet insert to make future removing easier. Haven't actually seen any photos of a completed project though. It would certainly make attaching them easier as I can't seem to find a suitable adhesive which either stands up to summer heat or doesn't react with the vinyl.

Thought I'd give it a shot using dome topped hex key screws.

Dumb question maybe but anyone know what I need to buy? I need an extra 7mm to go through my panels so 35 to 40 mm should do it I think. These are the originals.

The standard fixings are plastic scrivets so if you have metal fixings they have already been replaced. I haven't got a scrivet to hand but I recon they are 25-30mm long

Went for 50mm M5 machine screw. Small washer.
Pretty happy with the result.

Thoughts..?
Maybe even better with black screws?

Ply and vinyl you say? I like the effect. Looks pretty similar to the stripe in the seats.
Would you mind sharing your source for the vinyl and the spec of it please?

Help needed.

I really fancy having the screws and washers in anodised black but can't find em anywhere!
Don't like the silver because there is no other interior silver - only red and black.

Need M5 x 50. Prefer dome head hex but not essential.

So far I have sprayed the screws black but the paint chips easily. Gonna try Smoothrite if I can't find a black screw.

Any ideas?

What screws are you talking about? Part numbers or illustration would help. My door hardware is still in several boxes so I am clueless what you are needing.

You can get hardware plated black and also get them powdercoated. Not really inexpensive, but certainly n option to finish a project correctly.

I think he is referring to the screws he used to hold the vinyl covered wooden panel shown in the picture of the door card higher up. Clearly not the standard items normally hidden by the carpet.

I think you said earlier in another topic that these were M5 x 20 in which case search Ebay - search 'M5 button head screws black'. One supplier, at least, allows you to pick the length & qty, less than £5 for 20mm x 20 qty when I looked!

How about something like a Button-Head Socket Cap Screw

They come in black and have a kind of dome to them.

The head diameter is 9.5mm and the rise is 2.75mm

This is the catalog description:

For a finished appearance, these screws have a low rounded head. A wide bearing surface distributes the load. Length is measured from under the head. Not recommended for high-strength fastening.

Metric screws have dimensions that meet ISO 7380. Strength is comparable to that of Grade 8 screws. They have a Class 6g thread fit, a minimum Rockwell hardness of C32, and a minimum tensile strength of 142,000 psi.

Black Oxide—Screws have been heat-treated for hardness, which results in a dark surface color.

I know it's been nearly a year since you did your post, however if your interested in going back to this project, may i suggest avoiding the visible screws, the way i did it was using Velcro to keep the plywood in place, that way i can remove the panels and the screws are hidden

How did you cut the ply? Did it have to be laser cut?

I cut mine using a jig saw

not necessarily the same make but you get the idea

take a look here may help you a bit on an alternative way to achieve similar results.

I suggest getting a big sheet of paper to draw in the shape of the panels. I didnt use one and ended up spending a lot of time using a file to trim down to correct size.

What thickness of Ply did you use?

Why not use the OEM scrivets and then velcro the panels in position?
It's rattle free, easy to remove and does not show any screws, be it silver or black

You could also use embedded nyodymine magnets in the panels, and behind the door panels!

Velcro is a great fastener but the glue that sticks it to the door card/insert fails in the heat (I know, I have tried it!).

I think the best way is to use fir tree connectors, my plan is to cut the correct plywood base, insert it loosely in the card, drill some holes through the ply and into the door card, then remove the ply, insert & glue some fir tree fasteners (that protrude beyond the ply) through the holes, cover the ply with leather (or whatever) and then press it back into the door card fixed through by the fir tree fasteners.

I hope this makes sense!
