Rear View Mirror attachment

I have a situation with my elan's rear view mirror. The other day it fell off or popped off - I'm not sure how it happened. It took some glass with it, but didn't create anything that looks like it is going to spread. So I have a hanging mirror with it's metal mount base attached, and attached to that metal is some glass. I need to re-attach it somehow.

So has anyone had esperience with this? I'm looking at using the mirror attachment glue/kit that you can buy for $6 at AutoZone, but didn't know if it will attach glass on glass. It is made to attach metal to glass.

Any one that can say "been there done that - it works" or "That won't work, try this other stuff."

My experience has been less than satisfying with any of the retail kits I have found.

I now usually go to a glass shop to have a mirror reinstalled since the Industrial kit works a lot better and all of the glass shops in the US will do it for free.

I tried several adhesives with mine: superglue, glass bond, araldite instant, nail extension adhesive.
Maybe temperature was my problem..maybe surface preparation?
Non worked very well so I tried superglue again & it has held

BCN's suggestion sounds good to me. Some industrial adhesives are significantly better than anything available in a DIY store.

I agree on the glass shop recommendation - mine and others on LEC have had windshield cracks whose origin was the mirror mounting point. While yours may not look like it would spread, it could be relatively cheap prevention.

Haven't had to do it on the Elan, but have done it on other cars. I purchased the kit of stuff at Autozone (Permatex?), followed the directions exactly and have not had one fall off yet.

For a repair that involves a hunk of glass, however, I can't say. Haven't had that challenge (yet).
