Lotus Elan Central

Just bought my first Elan and already my glove box wont shut.
Looks like the locking device is bust as it hangs open all the time.

Can anyone tell me where I could buy a new lock or glove box door?

Welcome to Elan ownership!

Are you sure it doesn't need adjusting? Mine used to be a bugger to close but I then found that by pulling the door up at the same time, it shut first time. All it needs is a slight re-adjustment of the catch (I must get around to that one day).

Good to hear another one is in the Area as u don`t see many up this end i`m in the Oldham Area. Were in manchester are u and what model/colour did u get?

Does the lock fall out? as there should be a blastic piece that slides in to keep the lock in place

I am in South Manchester got a Nice red SE Turbo that has been chipped by a member of the Forum I belive.

The lock does look like it is dead, there is no response when you pull the catch so looks like the catch is bust. Not sure if it is the handle of the metal lock.

Nope bought it off a very good freind of mine up in York. Please dont tell me this chip will destroy my car?
I belibe its running at 200BPH at the moment. It still has the standard Air Fliter in it so looking at fitting one soon.

Any sugestions?

Not sure he is getting me the rest of the details - it cost him about 1k and it is a plug in device. I know the chap came out and did it and advertises here somewehere

Hi Baron,

Everest chip is on the list of famous LEC good stuff for your Elan

My glovebox lock broke into 5 or 6 pieces last week. Starting off from being harder to get it to close and lock. I used my glovebox a lot.

The whole thing is pretty easy to take apart. You just have to release the big C plastic piece that secure the lock from the inside, then push the lock out.

I found that 2 small hinge pins could work loose over time. Once it slipped off the hole the whole mechanism inside would just work loose. After figuring out how the spring tension pieces work. I reassembled them back, finished with pushing the pins back, and now it works like a brand new lock again.

I only open the glove book and the hinge broke off the dash side so nothing to do with the lock. What do u expect with the None BBR pacific sick beast :lol:

Maybe stick some more bluetak on there :-D

Maybe next year well get the NW LEC meets going since there`s a few elaners turing up :!:

Well I did that and took it apart and guess what no tension pieces inside :evil:

Have a good look in the foot well, that's where I found mine, after the pin that hodls it in works it's evil way out, the spring launches it's self and the handle goes floppy.
I then did the same as Ekapol.

That'll be holds, not sure what hodls is. :oops:

When you re assemble you may want to wrap sticky tape around the pins to (make them thicker &) stop them sliding out again. :-D

Ok had a good look and then phoned the previous owner.

Looks like he tried to repair it too and has therefor lost the spring device

This gets better and better lol

Any ideas where I could get one? or even a new lock?

Retaining Clip is expensive for that plastic thingy.

You could just use your old one.
