Starter Repair Kit

Postby Simon_P » Thu 21.11.2019, 01:54

Hi All,
As promised the Starter Repair Kit list is here. I have the BOM and can get most of the parts. It is a few years since I rebuilt one and it is the terminals and plunger that wear out. There is also a cover gasket that I intend to include and a rubber terminal boot on the side that is prone to perish or get eaten by mice, which I suggest is optional as it is six quid.

I will take pictures of the parts when they arrive.

Simon Hi
Can you confirm for which Starter motor the proposed kit is intended. (Denso, Lotus, other....)
Other parts required may well include the two (2) roller bearings (depending on play).

Simon asked me to post the following info. It may be of help to those envisaging the repair of the starter motor.
My one packed up two weeks ago (I added a post requesting info on removal). In the meantime, I eventually managed to get it out and have had it refurbished.

Removal is far from being easy, especially the top bolt located underneath the plenum making access very difficult. It's impossible to access from beneath so go in from the top (engine compartment). I found removing the gearshift cable bracket and pushing cables aside made it easier to access. There's no room for a socket so the ideal tool is a "C"-shaped or "S"-shaped 14 mm spanner and even with this brute force and perseverance are required.

As Simon stated, the most common cause of failure is the plunger unit and the copper contacts. The latter were extremely worn (scored). My brush set was ok but I also required the two roller bearings as there was slight play. I'll also need a new "boot" which was unavailable.

Have attached a few photos.

David

8944410871 is the Isuzu number 128000-4571 is the Denso number A100E6028S is the Lotus number they are one and the same made by Denso.

I can do the bearings but that adds to the cost, they are C3 tolerance which has more play than usual I'll do a rebuild and make suggestions.

It depends on what is included I'd rather have parts and pictures before saying more.

Cheers,

Typical LEC anything for a list! and this one has started without me and I'm not sure what the options are.

See the wiki for rebuild details. The Plunger and the terminals are clear, looking at the second picture you can see a gasket shaped like a house and the terminal boot on the end of the blue cable cover. Are we talking about the same boot? there is also the one on the end of the harness cable which I will have to find if that is required as well.

Sorry Simon, I hadn’t noticed it wasn’t you who started the List. Happy to wait for you to sort out what’s needed, but still expressing interest.

The boot I meant is the one to which you referred in your original post, but please let us know the final shape of the kit and I’m in.

And thanks for doing another Group Buy; much appreciated.

Ok I've taken the starter to pieces and looked at various parts. My starter wasn't too bad just worn terminals but David's needed the motor bearings replaced. So I suggest 2 kits Kit = A Plunger, Contacts, boot and seal as picture.
DSC_0273.JPG

and Kit B - As above plus the motor bearings.

Prices:
Kit A will be £12 plus postage
Kit B will be £23 plus postage

Postage is 20p for the envelope and about £4 with Royal Mail I'm looking at cheaper options. so it may be a little cheaper if you aren't in a hurry.
The reduction gearing is available so I'll post more after the rebuild (Hopefully tonight) and maybe a kit C. Also if you would like other parts eg brushes please make a note.

Please add your name to the appropriate list

Kit A
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Kit B
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

If people can get names added quickly I can probably get a few out as stocking fillers in the post tomorrow. It's good when your hobby is useful for things like that

Hi Tuga,

It's that time of year - End of Jan is fine with me Please add your name to the list with a note "end of Jan"

I have bought a few kits in advance if any of the alternator kit people want one (to save £4 on postage) or if anyone is desperate, or needs a Christmas present.
