HELP - LEAK CALIPER PISTON REAR

Postby PHIL70 » Wed 16.09.2020, 09:07

Hello,

I am french and I am the owner of a Elan 1992.
Sorry for my english. It is very poor
I have a problem with my rear caliper piston .
it leaks at the level of the yellow plastic which is in the middle of the piston.
What can I do ?
Can we replace only the piston ?
What other solution can I have and where to order the parts ?
Can we find the rear calipers on other cars ?
I don't know what to do.
Thank you for the reply.

Regards

SJ Sportscars do refurbished pistons I believe, you MAY be able to get them from Rock Auto too.

Hello Phil. First of all, let me say your English is not poor. It is very good. In fact, it is far better than some Brits I know :?

Re. your problem with your rear calipers can I point you in the direction of the Wikilec http://wikilec.com/view/Brake_Caliper_Sliding_Pins

You can get your old calipers reconditioned at SJS but it will be expensive. Parts (ie pistons, sliding pins, seal kits etc...) are also available if you can identify what you need and can do it yourself https://www.sjsportscars.com/parts-and- ... rchresults

Incidentally, those parts I mention above are all new and not reconditioned

Hi Phil70 (sorry, I don't know your real name  )

I have refurbished many calipers (front and rear) for the elan, always using parts from Roackauto.com.

Although they are based in USA, their delivery is excellent, and usually within 3 days (to UK).

You need to know that the rear calipers are different between the left and the right - but are used on Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, 1991, (and other GM cars which share that same platform)....... BUT......... on th eElan, htey are used on the oposite sides.

So, for a Left hand caliper on the Elan, you would need a Right hand caliper for the Oldsmobile - it is the pistons which differ between the two, so if you are wishing to rebuild the calipers, it is important.

For the past 3 years or so it has been getting harder to find just the pistons (although the rubber seals for the refurbishment are easily available), but the whole calipers can be obtained quite easily.

I have just looked at their website, and can see that they have a CARDONE 184328 for the rear right of the Oldsmobile (so is the correct one for the Rear LEFT on the Elan), and CARDONE 184327 for the other side.

I can estimate the cost, based on delivery to a UK address, to be about £82 GBP including VAT and delivery - for both sides.

I cannot guarantee that the handbrake mechanism will be identical, but it will certainly be made to work , you may need to use the levers from your current calipers.

Either way, it is the most cost effective way to get6 all the parts you need, with least cost - and a set of new pads can be added to the order for not much extra cost. (and new sliders if you want them).

At the moment, they are listing just the piston for one side, at a price of £35 - so the whole caliper is actually cheaper than the parts to repair yours.
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually.....

go on - click this link - you know you want to!

I put these exact models (the Cardones) on mine, just a couple months ago. The handbrake lever was compatible on one of them, but I did need to swap out the lever on the other one, with one from my old calipers. It did take me a bit of fussing to dial it all in, but it was easy enough, once you know that is what you have to do. Bonne chance!

Hello,
Thank you for the replies.
I should like to know if the whole calipers(front and rear) of the Elan are the same as the PONTIAC > 1988 > GRAND PRIX > 2.8L 173cid V6
