Is the (unusual) deathly silence an indication;

a) it can't be done
b) it's that easy that I'm stupid for asking - It's B - read the HOW-TO
or
c) no one's ever tried?

Hi Gordon,
I have also looked at this and decided it would simple (easier) to remove, rebush and replace. My reasoning related to access, brake pipes, getting the old ones out and the need for general derusting etc.
Let us know how you get on!

Still struggling with this one...

I've got the old bushes out (cut the rubber out, then collapsed the outer sleave).

How much force am I looking at to press the new ones in - any ideas?

Gordon.

Here's a quick write-up.
I'm not sure on how to submit it to the Wiki - if it's worthy, can someone stick it in for me?

Gordon,

Now I can see how simple it is, I might have a go myself (these are the only major bushes on the red elan elan which are still not in Poly!).

As always, I'm sure there was much head scratching and trial & error along the way before ending up with such a 'simple' system.

And i certainly don't mean to sound like I think you should have got the answer quicker - I know how awkward it is to do many jobs on cars, not just elans, before coming up with that moment of epiphany when it all seems so easy.

Great job Gordon, and thanks for reducing the size of the PDF file for us dial up people (from 5 to 1MB)

I'm thinking of changing the raft bushes, the PDF doesn't exist any more. Everybody says what a simple solution it is, but can anybody let me know what it is?

Cheers,

Use www.lotusm100.com/manuals

The forward bush is C100C6006F and the rear is either C100C6006F or E100C6001F if after VIN R 6001 ( I know the Fed Car uses to latter # as does the S2.

They are both obsolete from Lotus SJs has both numbers listed as available.

Brilliant, thanks, though it was the PDF posted by Gordon that I was after, it sounds like he had a nice way of doing it without removing the raft. I've not really looked at how the raft bolts to the car (though I did look at it in your hosted manuals), I'll take a look at the weekend.

I started thinking about the raft bushes about 2 hours after I had placed an order with SJ!! I'm still only thinking about it at the moment, it'll probably be a few months before I get round to it.

Cheers,

Bern.

I have several front suspensions disassembled and I don't see any way to replace the lower bushings without removing the RAFT.

Sometimes, cutting corners ends up being more work than doing it right.

As long as the bolts arn't seized, removal of the raft isn't a hard job - and as already said, removing and replacing the bushes in situ isn't anything like an easy option.

When I have done them in the past, I am fortunate enough to have a spare pair of rafts - so I can replace all bushes in slow time, then just swap the rafts over. Sometimes, the one coming off will need a bit of work to remove seized bolts (which I cut off to remove the raft), so if it is time-critical you may have problems getting it all done.

I'm trying to locate the howto - or at least the pictures - will update in due course....

I've found the pictures - I'll knock up the HowTo Again tomorrow (Y)

It's amazing how time ticks by - I'd not just lost the PDF, I'd completely forgotten ever doing the job!
