Dear All:

I have had to cancel my trip to Donington.

But this could be a blessing for all of you. I'm hoping to take a quick "vacation" trip over there shortly after Easter. What that means is that I might be able to bring some of the hose kits back with me if they are ready by then.

Sincerely,

Algirdas

Dear Ekapol and Others:

I called James today and he will check with Samco next week and get back to me then. As soon as I hear anything, I will post it up here.

I recieved my hoses from Samco today. Thanks for your effort on this Algirdas.
My only cleavet is that now I have all these fine looking hoses, but not having to do any work yet on my cooling system, I don't really know if they are all the correct hoses or not. ( Car has 11,000 mi. and hopefully they were purchased for a rainy day). Is there any way of verifing shapes and sizes, diameters etc., besides crawling around underneath and beyond? Any pictures of this set around?
There was a checkoff list of parts numbers on the lid of the box, perhaps someone can verify that they got the same hoses. One each of the following:
TB1829,,,, TB1834,,,, TB2156
TB1830,,,, TB1835,,,, TB2157
TB1831,,,, TB1836,,,, TB2038,,,, :?:
TB1832,,,, TB1837,,,,
TB1833,,,, TB1838,,,,

I've also received my hoses today. Thank you so much Algirdas.

They look all black and beautiful

Yes, mailman221 I also got one of each as you posted. Total of 12 pieces but 13 item numbers. Notice that the bigest piece is actually 2 hoses attachs to each other.

They look smaller than I thought in person. Smaller than OEM hose I remember, but strong and seem to be well made. One hose has a fold up nick on the surface. I'll let you know later if it is ok.

How much time are we looking at for putting in the whole set? Can't wait to get my hands dirty ;-)

Dear Mailman:

That's good news. Hopefully Ekapol's set is in route to him since he is beginning to feel like a Dutch boy hanging around a leaky dike.

I'll try to check with James in the morning and see what is going on.

Remember that two things nail hoses-use and time. Just because your car only has 11,000 miles on it should not give you a false sense of security that you have "11,000 mile" hoses on it. You need to factor in 15 years of time as well.

My car has 46,000 miles on it and I drove it 2,400 miles to get it home. I had a new top and bottom radiator hose in my suitcase as a precaution. Time adjusted, I'm assuming I have, say, 90,000 miles hoses on it and, hence, the reason I am putting on new hoses. Plus, it would be a real downer to lose a hose halfway between Meeteetse and Ten Sleep, Wyoming on a Saturday night.

I hope Ekapol gets his hoses real soon. I'm worried for him.

Sincerely,

Algirdas

Dear Ekapol and Mailman:

Ekapol-My worries are over!

Ekapol and Mailman-could one of you do a quick and dirty comparison of the main top and bottom radiator hoses? Those are the two hoses unique to Fed Elans and I want to make doubly and triply sure that Samco and Amber got them right. If not, the next time I am in San Francisco, Marie is going to don her favorite dominatrix outfit and get downright medieval on my sorry ass (Brit. arse).

Nice proactive steps. That's how us Elan-ers should travel. Light and always with few hoses :smt031

Ekapol, I agree, they look smaller than I expected. I'll be anxious to hear how your installation goes and if all fit as well as expected. They are quite sharp looking. My car is still in winter storage (Iowa winters), but if I can squeeze some time I'll try to check out the hoses that Algirdas has concerns. Have fun on your install!

This picture might help showing roughly if they got it right.

Dear Mailman:

Hose clamps were an additional option. Two ways to go on this: (i) Get the hose clamp set from Amber or (ii) find you local Fastenal http://www.fastenal.com/web/locations.ex store and order Ideal clamps from them. Ideal makes a several types of marine grade stainless steel smooth band hose clamps. Here is one of them:

http://www.idealtridon.com/catalog/clam ... ION_ID=168

The first option (theoretically) is more expensive but hassle free and the second is less expensive but more of a hassle.

Dear Mailman:

In any event make sure the hose clamps you use are non-perforated and designed for use with silicone hoses. I'm sure that there are other manufacturers out there in addition to Ideal/Tridon. I just find that getting hose clamps from the local speed shop ridiculous because of the cost and getting them from an industrial supply house is less expensive.

Algirdas, I'd be interested in knowing if you plan on heading to "the olde country" as you indicated a little while back. I've not yet placed an order for hoses as its simply not at the top of my project list yet. However, if you're going over AND you are inclined to bring back a set I may very well ask to make your list. That's if all the above mentioned possibilities happen and you are still contemplating lugging back a trunk full of Elan goodies

Many thanks as always!

Algirdas, James,

Not heard back yet if my red 3 are made, but am hoping for an email sometime soon from James to tell him how much I owe him for postage, etc... Now some of the Fed sets have arrived I'm getting excited again.

Cheers,
Ian

Dear Ian and Blair:

I'll check with James after the holiday to see what is going on.

Blair-I'm hoping to pop over to the UK for a quick vacation later this month. If I have room, I'll pick up a set for you. If I have to send back a box via FedEx, I can put them in there as well and we can split the cost on some equitable basis.

The bottom hose is quite a job by itself. Any tips for me if you've already replaced it? Another Lotus puzzle there :?

I replaced 9 yesterday. :-D Didn't replace those 2 right at the firewall and the bottom hose.

The last hose clamp is really a two person job with one under the car holding the clamp in place with the top side using a long handle screw driver to tighten.

Ekapol wrote: I replaced 9 yesterday. :-D Didn't replace those 2 right at the firewall and the bottom hose.

The two at the firewall were killers due to tight confines. I resorted to a razor blade to cut the tubing off the nipple which was too flexible to break the seal formed over time.

I just got mine and replaced all of them. The only issues I have are the heater valve was shot and I am hunting down a replacement and the last missing short large hose that connects to the radiator. It doesn't seem to be part of the kit. Am I missing something or should I source this last piece separately?
