GT2560R Upgrade

Postby CRAMBURY RS » Wed 17.09.2008, 05:59

I don't know if you folks do stickies, but I was hoping to post pics of my GT28R/GT2560R install somewhere other than in LGM's group buy thread and have this available/open to everyone to post any issues arrising from the install.

my greatest recommendation, if she is willing, pay LGM and Ekapol to make another group buy unless your are mechanically inclined!!!
link to the current (though closed) group buy:
viewtopic.php?f=85&t=12796&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=80

feel free to view all my pics as needed:
http://s25.photobucket.com/albums/c99/v ... 20Upgrade/

This you will need:

ADAPTER PLATE
(4) turbo mounting studs, ARP bullet heads
the ARP stud if i recall is a 5/16x18 into the adapter and 5/16x24 for the nut (SAE threads). the length is about 1.700" or just near that (1/2" into the adapter course thread, 1/2" for the turbo flange and 1/2" fine thread for the nut and the 3/16-1/4" of smooth shank dividing the threads).

(4) 35mm M10x1.5 allen bolts
(4) locking washers optional
(1) 15mm M10x1.5 allen bolt
11/16" high-speed drill bit to counder sink allen bolt (i used a 5/8" bit but had to shave the bolt head)
3/8" drill bit to counter sink studs
carbide bits and die grinder.

after porting and with copper gaskets

TURBO
Garrett GT2560R 446541-1 or 446541-4
3-bolt compressor outlet 2" OD
2-bolt compressor inlet 3" OD
custom downpipe elbow (see LGM link)
(2) banjo bolts with NPT to -6AN fittings
30 inches of -6AN stainless braided line
90 degree -6AN
45 degree -6AN
oil restrictor
i had to rotate the actuator rod 180 degrees to clear the drain tube

oil drain tube from stock IHI with bored bolt holes

another small issue i encountered was having to shave the T25 a little to allow my hex bolts to fit.
Image

had to throw this one in there, pics of the VC with oil restrictor.

i'll be editing this post until someone pitches in.

high temp paint. duplicolor, i think it's the ford red. i would use a primer first, mine started to chip. i did scuff it, just didn't have primer at the moment. they make a high temp primer.

how reliable is this upgrade?
any reliability issues?
and what about the overall cost of this upgrade?
I am thinking of buying an Elan here in the states and doing the turbo upgrade but I am wondering if it will pass emission tests

LGM and Ekapol have had their setup up and running for some time now with great results. i have not heard of them having any major issues. reliability will be dependent on your driving habits.

as far as cost, well...that depends on if you wish LGM to build you a kit (assuming her and Ekapol will run another group buy) or if you will be piecing it all yourself and making your own parts.

with respect to emissions, LGM is in San Francisco and I can only assume she has to pass CA smog.

this thread was started mainly for technical info on the installation. you questions do pose a great relevance and I am sure they will be addressed once members of the kits start posting their results.

if you require parts please PM me, i have some or can get others.

Both Ekapol and I pass CA smog. Even with 550cc injectors and a 3BAR MAP sensor. Ekapol uses his car daily and I use mine she I'm in San Francisco. Word is the rest of the country will be required to pass CA type smog checks on January 1, 2010. This was the point of the kits, better reliability than stock through the use of more modern equipment. Better response from the turbo didn't hurt either.

I would love to know what the 0-60 times are like with the turbo upgrade. Anybody done one?

If all you change is the turbo and leave the injectors/chip/rear cat in place, you should be able to pass without trouble. How many other Elans has your friendly local emissions inspector seen ;) ? If you put the stock heatshield back on, it's easy to make this a "stealth" upgrade so as to walk right through the visual inspection. The tailpipe test is influenced more by the ECU/injectors/Oxygen sensor/cat than by the turbo.

IMO it's a Lotus - they've never seen one and are unlikely to fail you based on a modified car. The only thing I'm really worried about when I smog the car are the numbers passing. It's black and white there, either they pass or fail based on the emissions test numbers. In most of CO (except where Algirdas is, the lucky dog), we have pretty strict emissions standards these days, where they throw the car on a dyno for up to a 20-minute drive. (My Elan's pipes were clean enough that it passed in 30 seconds and they rolled her off).

i don't know about this emissions in 2010, but with 9.45:1 compression ratio i think i'll be fine. i'm going to pick up a fake cat for visual just in case i ever to move and need to pass that BS. sad part is...i don'te have an EGR or vacuum canister anymore  i used the bracket for the vacuum can to mount my water-methanol injection pump

i can just pay like 100 bucks and get the car to pass through inspection and emissions
thank god the elan is a pre-96 car so it does not have to go through all these BS with OBDII tests etc (if i got the name right)
so in case I bought another elan here in the US could someone actually make a kit for me or at least provide me with all the parts needed to go through the setup?
Also will the car need to be re-tuned or can we use Alan's chips?
I suppose the first should be the answer right?

Marie I was in SF a month ago and if I knew you live there I would had invited you for crab and shrimps somewhere down at Fisherman's Warf.
It would have been a good chance to talk about these turbo kits too.
I know you have done the upgrade too so please throw in your knowledge on this.
Anybody else that can give more info please do as I am very very interested in buying another Elan and getting the turbo kit on.

How does the car handle with the extra power?
Can traction control be installed on the car? There should be a lot of wheelspin and I can only think of the Quaife LSD again if I want to solve things a bit on corners.
0-60 digital times should be good to know as also 0-100mph
and what power are you all running with the upgraded turbo kits?

Please throw some light here in the questions

because the upgrade will flow more air into the engine you need to realize you will need to flow just as much OUT! i will be running a 2.5" exhaust, flex pipe, v-band, straight "look-a-like" cat, resonator and the quietest muffler i can find! i believe most the LEC members are running a 2.25", correct me if i'm wrong?

the hardest item to fabricate is the downpipe, which THANK GOD for LGM!!! "she's got skillz" (jamming out now)

i love that you all kept your air box, but because i removed mine AGES ago, i went with a CAI behind the headlight down toward the inner fender/bumper area.

i have a T25 adapter ready to ship. there is a small laundry list of items you will need. i would check out the group buy to make sure if attempt to do this yourself, that you obtain everything needed!

Not exactly conclusive figures but Ekapol and I were racing on an onramp. He in his red car with a BOV, exhaust and an everest chip and me in mine. I was well ahead, 2-3 carlengths and pulling away after 1/4 mile or so. I have dynolicious on my iPhone. When I get the chance I'll try and get more coclusive figures

next thing you fabricate should be a camera mount

doing the downpipe should not be something impossible as we already did our own one in Cyprus for my other Elan
I believe there should be capable mechanics that can do a proper one for the new turbo.
A list of what exactly is needed would be cool to have!
I think the way to go with the new setup should be with proper tuning

so how much power are you putting with the turbo kit?

Actually, the list is sort of partitioned above based on the installation.

in short though:
TURBO plus oil line, water lines, oil drain hose and all the fittings to connect them
INTAKE, BOV and couplers
EXHAUST downpipe (flanges, O2 sensor bung(s), flex pipe optional but HIGHLY recommended)

That's kind of a loaded question as it's all relative. I have the setup on my car with 550cc injectors, a 3 BAR MAP sensors and an EBC. 310BHP has been the norm at 15-16psi.

totally relative! aren't you also running a chip?

i will be running stock ECU, 2-BAR, SAFCII, adjustable FPR and water-methanol to supplement fuel demands, dual stage boost controller with second setting at 14psi, FMIC and little to NO exhaust restriction...and another 300lbs :D

someone may opt to run a standalone ECU.

the question with the setup is not will it yield a great increase in HP, but how far you are willing to go to reach the maximum potential of the turbo. if i remember right, the GT2560R starts to drop off after 17psi and the ECU will not read beyond a BAR (14.7).

i can personally live without the added 2-3psi and not have to upgrade my MAP or injectors, though i have been considering a set of 370cc.

For what it's worth, Houdini equipped Smaug with the same setup as Marie: GT2560R, 3 Bar, 550cc injectors and MBC. Exhaust is 2.5", with main cat and no precat, running the stock computer with a California chip. I have not dyno'd the car. All I can say is, when returned to stock levels of boost, he feels VERY slow. :) IIR, Marie also uses a stand-alone ECU to reach her magical numbers.
