I had no self centering issues with this particular kit. If i'm correct, Bob adressed this issue specifically in his design.
I have no experience with AB. Just S1, S2 and Bob.

Rip,

You'll have a great deal of trouble filing a rod end! in any case the ball of the rod end is clamped in place and all the rotation is done in the ball on a teflon liner.

There were a couple of reasons for fitting rod ends one is the misalignment issue, like how is a bush supposed to cope with a shaft that not only rotates but also moves in and out, Lotus answer rubber bush, AB cables answer nylon bush, my answer rod end, two work one doesn't, no prizes for the one that doesn't.

JonT, I assume 5th to 3rd/4th is ok, the system relies on the springs in the selector box to self center the gear lever, it could be one of the ball joints is a little stiff and should free up with a little use if it doesn't let me know.

Done a couple of hundred miles now with only one minor issue - I didn't do the lock nuts on the adjuster tight enough. Discovered this when I lost 2,4,R after they worked themselves loose on the fore-aft cable while out with a friend this morning  Fortunately I had the 24mm cut-down spanners in the boot, so didn't take long to sort. Now done up a bit better and the self centering seems to have sorted itself out

Done over 900 miles on Bob's cables & Dave's short shift - no issues at all. A good smooth gear change

I did cheat & get them fitted by GST though.

So what's the issue, if it is just resticted to 3rd then it may be something else other than cables or shift linkage, like loose nuts.

My 3rd used to crunch when changing down to accelerate, but not when changing up.
Changing the gearbox oil regularly seems to have cured this.

Anyone fancy fitting mine? I'm happy to pay, just haven't had the time and don't want to break anything.

Hi I have just gotten hold of Bob's short shift, and my fitters are stumped!!
Bob has tried to help, but my fitters, being non-native english speakers, had trouble understanding the instructions :(
I would appreciate if someone/anyone can post some photos on how the parts look when fitted and where they are suppossed to be fitted.
Attach some photos which got them scratching their heads...

Image

i undertsand from Bob that this is to replace the fits on the fore/aft lever on the gearbox. however the fitters are not sure how to put it in. Appreciate an after pic for this

Image

this is to replace the crossgate bell crank in the selector housing at the gearbox. appreciate an after pic too

Image

4 of these nuts (together with the washers) are for fixing the cable to the bracket on the gearbox, and the other 2 is to be used with these at the gear lever end

Image

Image

correct me if I'm wrong on these,

and lastly,

Image

can I know which ball end goes to which cable

Apologise for the questions as I'm not really vry technically inclined, and my fitters don't really understand the terms I use for the parts

Many thanks in advance

And thanks Bob also for the fantastic brake kit! although my fitters forgot to fit the sleeves!!! Thanks for pointing that out to me...
The blue calipers matched my wheel nuts perfectly!

Cheers

Tks for the emails I received on my query...
my fitters finally managed to fit the short shift, and picked up the car today...
However, I am having difficulty engaging 1st and 2nd gear. I have to try few times before the 1st gear will engage, and then difficulty engaging 2nd gear from 1st. I realised that if I was to engage 5th prior to 1st and 2nd, I have no problems.
Also difficulty down shifting from 3rd to 2nd...
Anyone has encountered this problem? What may be the cause ?
My fitters claimed that they followed Bob's instruction, so if they really did, what might have gone wrong?
Please help.
Thanks.

Short shift should not create any selection issues.
It should be a little stiffer simply because the throw is shorter & you don't get anything for nothing.

Your issue sounds like the geartrain nut starting to come loose. This is an easy fix if you address it in time, although it does involve removing the gearbox end cover.

What do you mean exactly with 'difficulties' ?
What do you feel or hear? Is the feedback the same for all problems?

Sorted!
They put 2 washers on the same side instead of 1 on each side on the selector side...
Tks for the advise
