Considering improving/restoring heat insulation...

Postby WienLot » Thu 15.08.2013, 10:57

I am evaluating the potential interest for installing heat insulation material at various places of the car: floor and dash, tunnel and trunk.
May be there is already some material in place in the car in which case it's obviously calling for replacement...

Before I remove the carpets which might be glued, can anyone tell me please:
- Was M100 having such material when leaving the factory?
- If answer yes, on which body parts and what material was used?
- Has anyone already fitted any equivalent stuff to his car?
- Any try or former experience using HushMat stuff for instance? (http://www.hushmat.com/media/Install-FLOOR-Firewall.pdf)
- Any other stuf tried by anyone on LEC?
- Would later removing of such stuff be easy?

Any reco welcome.

I have used Dynamat Extreme on a good portion of the car including the trunk/boot, firewall, rear bulkhead and floor. It has helped with noise and heat reduction but also adds a fair bit of weight if you plan to coat the car with it (probably about 25 pounds). On the floor pan there is some sound insulation foam which tends to degrade after all this time. There isn't a really much of a heat issue on the floor. The firewall also has this foam. I did not cover the centre tunnel with it and I do notice some heat from there but I'd question the value of covering that area given you'd have to remove a lot of wiring and the hand brake mech to do it right. Still, could be worth a shot.

When I removed the carpets I replaced the tatty old foam with new closed cell foam that I bought off eBay, cheap enough and, allegedly, improves both noise and thermal insulation.

Thanks for your feed-back Elanlover and Epipete !
Good point indeed reg. need to consider the matter of potential extra-weight... That may call for limiting specific treatment to specific surfaces.

Heat issues faced when hot to very hot weather that I wish to address:
- heat from the engine I can feel inside the car in feet area
- heat in the trunk right above the silencer
Both cases faced anyway either at speed or when stuck in traffic jam...

So will give thought to replacing the old stuff below the carpets by new closed cell foam while using Dynamat extreme for firewall area and trunk floor area.
For that last one, may be good enough to stick some material like G3 sheet (tip received from PNM Engineering) from below the car on the trunk floor right above the silencer. Will see.

The other benifit, and probably more critically, is that closed cell foam doesn't absorb and hold water so, apart from being lighter, it isn't consistently saturating the outriggers etc!

Dynamat Superlite is available for something like £100-140 for a 10-pack on eBay. I have a pack sitting here for fitment to the doors, floor, and anywhere else in the cockpit with what remains.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to use to replace the insulation on the underside of the bonnet?
Mine is starting to look a little scruffy.

perhaps one word of caution about Ebay & other foams: How a bout flamability? & will it drip when burning :!:

Just a thought... Or did Lotus did not care about that either back in the days ?
