Single key

Postby elaverick » Fri 19.01.2018, 22:14

Would it be possible (has any one done it), to replace the ignition, door, glove compartment and boot locks so there was only a single key involved? I know a remote locking system is an option but I’d rather have a single key if possible.

You would have to convert all of the locks to the S2 parts and they are now obsolete (since 2002).

The SE used several different locks that were available at that time but the S2 resolved everyone's requests for a common key.

You might find a breaker that will pull the full set from something in their yard and a locksmith can make a key if they don't have one to match.

That is why a few SE owners went to the remote control system.

While the S2 uses a common blank I think the boot has a different key.

The parts book Page 10.17A says the S2 kit includes: Doors, Boot, Ignition, Glovebox latch and alarm key insert blank
while the SE kit includes: Door and Boot Lock

Hi John,
I'm in a hotel waiting for a plane with several hours to kill...

SE Manual (1990) section BK page 24.
Boot lid latch
..... and is operated by the door key.
Which is incorrect as the he SE has a completely different blank for the boot.

I have checked the S2 service bulletin and that says single key operation of doors - not exactly helpful.

My S2 and the other one that I have driven have 2 keys, but I can't remember if the odd one is ignition or boot.
Currently 5000 miles away so I can't check.

I always thought the odd key was the glovebox.

From what I have read on other posts, on the S2, the ignition, door and boot keys are the same while the SE has door and boot keys the same but different ignition as well as different glovebox.

Maybe someone with an S2 will confirm the key arrangement for their car.

It is too bad Lotus ran out of replacement kits. They didn't have them made from scratch, rather they must have been used on some other car, so maybe a little research would provide those details. I remember reading the door lock bezels on the S2 were the same on some Pontiacs?

I hope you are 5000 miles closer to warmer weather...

Hi Geoff,
Some S2 owners with different glove box or boot locks would disagree with you!

If it was a different ignition key I would put it down to joy riders.

I recall discussions eons ago about buying kits and keys or single locks to get them all the same. I'm not bothered It seems normal to me, every British car I have owned has a different key for the boot and sometimes the globox. I was always told it was for security.

John,
A pleasant 28 of for the past 2 weeks. One of the the car models where I am working has lock bezels suspiciously like the S2 unfortunately it wouldn't be appropriate for me to ask.

Just for info, the SE has five keys:
1) ignition
2) doors and boot
3) glove box
4) alarm switch
5) aerial spanner

Oh, and you also need the remote control for the central locking and alarm.

As I thought that wasn’t enough to carry around, I also have a key for an anti-theft bar that fits onto the steering wheel. Why would you only want one?

My S2 has a separate glovebox key. Don't know if it always has had or if the latch has been replaced.

Nope, the Manual is correct. I've had 3 SE's and all of them used the same small key for door and boot as per the Manual. If yours didn't, it's been changed from OE.

Glove box key is the unique one and similar size to Ignition key, but no 'pointy end' - except my current use SE which has no keyhole so no key.

Interesting then that one of "benefits" of the S2 was single key operation of doors, not that I have found that to be correct either.

Just checked my S2 and it has a separate boot key.

Me, :D - when I had an SE with a lockable glove box.
Never put the hood up in the south of France so I'd keep most stuff in the boot but would toss the removable face of the radio/cd player in there and lock it when parking. Did the same in the UK if I knew it wasn't going to rain.
