Been running BBS 17"x7J ET42 wheels with 205/40ZR17 Toyo Proxes for nearly a year on one of my SE's. An internet tyre profile calculator said that was equivalent rolling radius to 205/50ZR15 but ride was a bit harsh till I found 22 psi was a comfortable compromise pressure. My Satnav confirmed they were the same as speedo still read as fast as it had on OE wheels. I read an article by Peter Stevens in which he said he designed the M100 to have more tyre in the wheel arch than Lotus put into production in UK, though US got 7Jx16".

bbs1024.jpg

Saw some 17"x7J ET42 100x4 wheels on ebay that nobody was bidding much for so got them with 2 decent tyres for £126. Put 2 tyres on for £124 so on the car for £250, but it seems they are like Marmite.. :-D Love or hate, nothing in between. My daughter said 'I hope you're going to paint them' - "maybe not" said I. 'Well at least nobody is going to steal them looking like that'...

These have got 215/45 ZR17 and the ride is better and the speedo is very nearly reading the Satnav indicated speed.
They've been professionally painted with a thick chip-proof paint and clean up very easily. Not sure whether to paint them or not...

Thanks Rambo, I plan to. Still got the silver BBS if I want to be 'Mr Conventional'.
Always thought blue and orange looked good together... had a lot of fun in this blue & orange car.

Would look good with some vinyl panels made up for the sides, maybe someone with photoshop skills could create an artists impression:-

Paint the car to match :D Two options I can see:
1. Arancio Stevo
2. Like the JW/Gulf Racing Porsches of the late 1960s / early 1970s

Yeah.. I think that influenced my choice of colours for the Mini, though we used a darker blue, similar to Lotus Pacific Blue but not metallic. Gulf used a lighter blue.
A mate worked in a Ford garage so we used Ford colours, as they were ...er... 'free'.. can't remember the blue, but mine had Vista Orange and the 'sister car' had the same scheme with Daytona Yellow.

In the late '60's I watched Joe Siffert 'dancing' the 917 through Brands' Paddock Bend in the wet, still a memorable masterclass in wet driving.
Over 500 bhp and 'fishtailing' out of Clearways, past the pits and arriving at Paddock with the tail going out left for the right turn lap after lap. Don't think he ever got it to go in a straight line.
Took this photo of Joe climbing aboard and I think co-driver was Derek Bell who's standing beside the car. Did my own developing and printing so only in B&W - but it's in colour in my memory.

Wow! What a memory. And not just in colour, but in noise, and smell, and the ground shaking, and everything else, I'll be bound. Brilliant

Go back a page in the post. Looks very similar to the 17" versions Jeffbro put on his car.

Won't fit.. 4x108 is the wrong PCD. You need 4 x 100.

So are there any minimum or maximum rates/data of what can we put on our car when it comes to wheels?

There's another thread about wheels here that you may find helpful ...forum.lotuselancentral.com/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=25336&p=321371#p321346

not keen myself. Too much like my wife's ST170 wheels for my liking...

st170 wheel.jpg

Look nice but cars driven with a bit of enthusiasm produce brake dust and all those spokes are a pain in the butt to clean...

I like driving, don't like cleaning...

It's all about minimizing torque steer, steering weight change, reducing castor and camber changes to give optimum stability over bumps and when cornering ... one criteria is to have the drive shafts as long as possible so the change in angle is reduced as much as possible (but also keep both shafts the same length, hence the jackshaft on one side). To enable more length in the drives shaft the hub carriers are not just 'vertical links' but stick out way beyond the upper & lower ball joints so the hub and brake disc are unusually close to the outside edge of the wheelarch. The 60mm offset puts the wheel back inside the wheel arch. No other manufacturer went to so much trouble optimizing suspension design so that amount of offset is quite unusual and wheel choice limited. It was also only a requirement for the front and Lotus could have done something that used more conventional wheels at the rear so there would be different front and rear wheels - but they didn't! They did on the Esprit, Elise etc but not the Elan.

So if that's correct why many guys here use different tire size for front and rear?? Thats wrong i think considering that we do not have a RWD car!
About offset is it true the choises between +-20% of the standard 60mm?
