Just failed the MOT on a split outer CV joint gaiter...

Simple question....is it a straight forward job?

Any nasty surprises to look out for and avoid?

I wont be tackling it until next thursday when I return from my hols, but some prior info would be good.

I have tool which will assist you with your cv boot. you have to take the driveshaft out of the wheel assembly but you dont have to dismanle the cv joint. Shout me when you return.

Depending on your point of view, I'm either a bodger or an inventive engineer - i use whatever i can find in the garage to do the job!

(Usually spending twice as much and twice as long to do the job, mind)

Well my definition of a bodger is someone who does not do the job properly, i think we have all been in the situation where we have used an item to get us out of a predicament by bending cutting or developing something, i would not class myself as an engineer by a long way, in the same way as i do not class myself/yourself as a bodger, as long as the job is carried out safely & too a satisfactory standard it does not matter how you reach your goal..!!

I know from previous diy experience having the proper tool for the job saves time & effort.

Stevie, what is this tool exactly?
I only have thursday to get this repair done. It has to go back early on friday for the re-test.
I am not getting back till 10.30pm (ish) on wednesday....ok to give you a call then to discuss?

I think he's talking about the following, it allows you to stretch the cv boot over the joint without taking the joint apart.

Cost about £10.

Or you can use a plastic pop bottle :wink:

Or, you can use a universal boot which is split and you glue together...ideal for rush jobs. Last one I used lasted about 5000 miles, for a tenner.

Job done and passed on re-inspection by the mot centre.

Not an easy job by any stretch of the imagination though!

First off was the effin hub nut! How effin tight was that? I failed with my methods for about 2 hours and ended up driving to the local garage who whipped it off in 20 secs flat using the air compressor tools!

Next pain in the ass job was stretching that boot over the cone! Got it over in the end, but what a job! warming it up in the oven helped!

btw, the hub nut is 32mm, (not 30mm like the first socket i bought and had to return!)

I think it was one of those days! What I thought would be an easy job turned into a trial of my patience! :-D

I dont think there is any problem with having tight nuts.. ;-)
