Although that part may be moving (that is the crossgate cable) the other may be snapped. You need to ask your assistant to wiggle the gearstick forwards and backwards and view the shaft to ascertain if it is being rotated. It is the rotational motion of this shaft that selects the gearbox in and out of a gear, the side-side motion merely selects which gear you want (in pairs).

From your red arrow, go left to the circlip then left again to a shaft running up/down in your photo with a grubby collar on it. It has a fescalised portion (shiny) at the selector housing end. Ask your assistant to move the gearstick fore/aft whilst you watch. The shaft should be attempting to rotate. If it isn't, then the cable is broken.

99.99% of 'gearbox' problems are actually the cables. 0.01% are a gearbox internal problem which would obviously be bad.

If this is the problem, you could manually move the selector from inside then engine bay then you could at least move the car, or if you put it in second, you could probably drive it a short distance with no other traffic.

The diagrams below might help you deduce what is what. Your red arrow is pointing to the bellcrank lever.

If you remove the top hose (only 2 circlips) and undo the two large electrical connectors underneath the hose, you will get a much better view of what is going on.

Assuming it does turn out to be a broken cable, which is very likely, then you should consider buying a set of the AB Motorsport replacement cables - they're way better than the OEM cables and don't suffer from the same weak point. You can order them from WillB here on the forum (he acts as a UK distro for AB Motorsport).

When you come to replace the cables, there's a write-up on replacing the gearcables on the wiki which you might find helpful.

Where are you based ? Maybe there's someone nearby who could give you a hand if you need it.
