clunking!

HI, ive got a clunk and rattle when im reversing and using the clutch... any ideas what it could be?

Could you give us a little more to go on fella....

Do you begin to reverse.....

and the car feels like it's jumped out of gear, but it hasn't...everything feels and appears normal...Just that wierd sound

reverses fine, stays in gear no problem.
Just as you lift the clutch and apply power theres like a twang and a rattle as you move the clutch up and down it maybe linked to my exhaust problem but it only seems to do it when im reversing...

Does it sound internal...

e.g. Some of the pressure plates fingers in the gearbox are detached....

Or does it sound external,

e.g. As if an engine damper or mount has gone allowing two surfaces to contact...

it sounds/feels underneath as i can feel the knocking, its worse when i turn when reversing then i get a big clunk

I think we're down to the front running gear and brakes...

CV joints, wheel bearings, raft bushes..engine mounts

How many miles has she got on her...

It's a hard one to diagnose with out seeing the car...

IIRC, Nick lives between somewhere Leeds & Manchester.

Could be the exhaust if it's close to the chassis - might be worth getting it checked out (for free) at QuickFit or similar.

That brings back memories. My exhaust used to foul my gearbox. It sounded like a metallic clank which did no damage whatsoever & went away on its own. Like Nicks, I could only hear mine when I engaged drive. Lotus did re-design, but this wasn't very good.
The Peco & Piper exhausts solve this properly by having a metallic section. If this is your noise, then fitting your Peco will cure it.

Edit: Metallic section I meant the Peco has a flexible section.

Is the sound more of a harsh buzz than a rattle?

I think RIP may be spot on, the guy i bought it of botched my exhaust so ill check that out. Hopefully fitting the pecco next Sunday. big grin!!!
So shall see if it goes after that
