That sounds about right for a really worn set of cables, I take it you can still get all gears?

Not sure about the SE/NA cables. These apparently have a plastic fitting.
S2 & AB cables have adjustment on the bracket which sits on the back of the gearbox casing, but from what I have seen, these should move the centre position left/right/forward/back. The distance of each gear from the centre position should remain constant.
A shortshift kit would help matters. It makes a massive improvement to the feel of the whole car. The only drawback is that this places more stress on the cables. (work = force x distance: work remains constant & if distance is reduced, force must increase) S2 & AB cables have a metal fitting.
I highly recommend a shortshift kit &, if you are a bit nervous of your cables, a set of S2 or AB cables to go with them.

Check out my tread as well, perhaps the crimps have worked loose. Repair is cheap, as long as it's S2 cables...

Oh Oh,
while I think on I have a set of used SE cables after I fitted a shortshift kit and replaced the cables with AB Racing ones. After getting to the point of no return I founf the cables to be in very good nick

so I fitted the AB's anyway.
If you want them make me an offer - say £40 plus delivery - I would point out however that if fitting a shortshift kit it is recomended by several people on this forum that you replace the cables with AB's which are stronger and all metal - the theory being that the shortshift kit puts extra load on the cables and they may snap - personally I don't necessarily agree - I think it depends on how you drive - if you are tracking then you are more likley to snatch gears and snap the cable - for normal use I don't believe it would be a problem - but there will be many who disagree - so I fitted AB's anyway - and found them to be a little stiff so that the gear stick didn't return to centre on its own - but it is getting better with use. By the way - fitting new gear cables is a bit of a pig of a job
AB's are available from Will B on this forum - AB also do a shortshift kit - (again from Will B) - which is a bit more complicated in it's operation and therefore more expensive - however IIRC it is also adjustable so you can adjust how much stick travel you want to change gear - personally I like Daves - simple to fit and works like a dream and cheaper - I could never see me changing settings besides ......I like simple.

For the shortshift kit, add your name to the list on
this thread. A PM to DeeAitch would be worthwhile too.
Dave does not make the cables though. You would have to get Lotus or AB ones. Lotus ones are very expensive though

Monty found the reason for this: The bush fits too tightly on the spigot at the transmission end therefore resists any movement. 5 minutes with a needle file (once you get to it

) improves this greatly.

But hopefully straightforward if done whilst replacing coolant pipes with Samco's
and thus the Project creep began
