which gearcables

which cables are the best ones to get when fitting replacements (1990 se), looks like i will have to do mine as lost all selction of the gears on the gearstick on the roundabout at ross on the way back from malvern.

i`ve just had a look at the receipts that came with the car and the cables were replaced in 2006 by stratstone,is there a reason that these cables would fail after such a short time or are there any other reasons that could affect the gearchange?.

Apparently they're prone to breakage as they use plastic in the connections...

the original design included a plastic insert and cotter pin to connect the cables to the end of the gearstick, and it's often this plastic insert which gives up and crumbles.

You have two choices, either buy a set of the S2 spec cables from a dealer, or LEC user WillB sells the AB brand of cables which were produced bespoke for our cars.

If you get S2 cables you'll need a different bracket (gearbox end) Good luck finding one - I failed..

have removed the cables for a look this morning and both ends of each cable are ok, the problem problem seems to be with the adjusters on the gearbox bracket. will put them back on and see if it`s that.

Brian, have you had the Elan long? I wonder if the previous owner was a little heavy-handed & stressed the cables a little too much?
Or maybe there is some oddity with your Elan which means the cables are more stressed than most? (The joys of a hand-built car).

It is possible that the cable comes out of the crimp. Annoying because the cables look OK, but when you shift, the steel mantle slides through the adjuster in stead of pulling the gearbox selector along ... (see here: viewtopic.php?f=37&t=14821&p=197316)
Best to be checked with 2 persons. One at the gear lever end and the other observing what's happening at the bracket on the gearbox.

have`nt had the car long and sunday was our first proper run.
had a good look at the cables and whoever fitted them at stratstone should be shot. on the crossgate cable the locking cap part of the adjuster was`nt attached to the threaded outer adjuster(dont know if i have described that correctly) and i think that when i tried to select first at the roundabout it all pulled apart,thus no gears.
have put it all back together and adjusted it correctly and it`s fine now.
the ends of both cables are metal and not plastic,so does this mean that they are the later cables ?. well at least i know how the cables fit, so if i change them in the future it wont take long.
i wonder whats next !.

Happy shifting Sounds like S2 cables 2 me but the proof is in the fixings @ the shifter end of things. You can determine from my tread what type of cables you have!
