Replacement Shift Cables

Very nice write up!! Can someone tell me the differance between the S1-S2-Isuzu and AB cables? I'm a little confused!

'S1' or more correctly NA/SE - plastic ends on cable outers with adjustment on plastic outer at gearbox end

S2 plastic end on gearstick end outer, but metal end with screw adjustment on gearbox end

AB cables - metal ends at both ends of the outer with screw adjustment on gearbox end

3 different brackets required at gearbox end to suit cables.

The fore/aft movement is great now after some filing, but shift lever doesn't self center at all. Does anyone have experience with this?

Indiana, Self center may be the large cable end at trans.
Make sure it also is not super tight. Large washers should turn easily. Cotter pin
may be to tight.------smaller spec. washer.
1. remove large end at trans. with the large washers.
2. center gear shift in cabin (vertical).
3. check relationship to pin position.
4. adjust cable length to accommodate pin.
Hope this helps. It seems to be the logic I followed.

Steve -w- AB cables and short shift just adjusted to inner most
position. Shifter a little stiffer but has less travel than center position or outer
slot.

I have found my side to side shift movement to be stiff.. Marie inverted one of the pins and I'll try that because the cable doesn't appear to line up very well at present.

When the bracket on the gearbox is mounted, it's causes the rigid parts of the cables to be outta of line with the selector.

I don't think so, however not having it center would bother me.

I'm up in northern, VA, about an 1 1/2 hour away.

Another car of ours kept jumping out of 3rd gear on deceleration. The transmission shop said a common cause is due to driving with a hand on the shifter and putting constant wear on the shift forks.

On the original cables the gearbox selector end (not the cross gate) has a rubber bush fitted and this will allow some misalignment much the same as the other end on the gear lever which has a ball joint fitted.
The AB cables have a bush fitted which will not allow for misalignment and I think that is the area that causes the gear selector to be stiff plus it puts unnecessary loads on the cable ends.
This end must allow for the fact the assembly moves in and out as the cross gate cable moves the selector shaft in and out which the AB cables do not allow for.
The cables themselves should allow 8 degrees of misalignment.

Are you suggesting that despite the more robust design that the AB cables are not quite designed properly to allow the correct movement of the gear lever?

I only ask as I am looking into buying a set as my crossgate cable is knackered.
