Which gear cable?

Hi all

I have had the inevitable gear selection cable failure. Initially I thought it was the crossgate cable as i seemed to be stuck in 2nd, sometimes able to get first. However, after I manually put the car in neutral i could wiggle side to side no problem from the gear lever, but when i selected a gear i would get stuck in it.

So am I right in saying it is the fore/aft cable that needs replacing?

PS I can't get it back into neutral once I have selected a gear. Usually just stuck in gear.

If you remove the cables from the gearbox are you then able to select the gears?
This should isolate the problem to either cables or gearbox or just the gearbox selector mechanism.

Will look into this.

With the wife in the car she says that the gear lever moves as I move the mechanical linkage at the box.

When it is in neutral I get cross motion with gear lever but as soon as I select a gear I have to go to engine bay to get back into neutral.

This is the fore aft cable, so it's at least one new cable for me.
