New Clutch - Advice please.

My son in law has a problem with his Elan Turbo, he's recently fitted new gear shift cables but started having problems with gear selection. Symptoms are it initially started to make a clunking sound on the passenger side when using the clutch, I have now tried the car and seem to be able to select gear ok but when I release the clutch nothing happens until you rev the engine to about 3000 rpm when it will start moving, this worked in both 1st and reverse gears, I didn't try it down the road as it seems the clutch is worn out, the smell of burning clutch was quite bad. The gear cables and clutch cable look fine so I'm sure that it's just the clutch.

I'd be interested for any other suggestions and more importantly where best to take it for a new clutch and associated parts, we're situated in-between Nottingham and Derby and don't really want to go to Peter Smith Sports Cars and it's not the kind of job we can undertake.

If you can smell the clutch it sounds like its slipping and in need of replacement ,How many miles has the car done ?.About Peter Smiths I live in Stoke On Trent well Audley actually but Stoke is the nearest city to me. I have purchased cars from Peter Smiths ,And he has done some work for me in the past When you consider the rarity of the M100 and not many people are familiar with it and how its put together ,it may be your best bet to contact them and get a quote for the clutch replacement you never know he might quote you 3.5 or 4 hours and if you give it to someone who isn't familiar with it could charge you 6 or 7 hours .At the end of the day the resulting figures could be quite similar

The car has done 96000 miles, on the original clutch.

I agree with your comments in general but have had some experiences dealing with PS, and know others with the same, so if someone can recommend an alternative we'd rather used them thanks.

We have two Calypos by the way.
