I've copied this post here because the symptoms were the same as the first post, but the solution was different.
(And also so that I could delete the other duplicate thread)
tommy wrote:i have just had the same problem taken to garage and it apears to be the nut on the main shaft of the gearbox that has become loose something to do with the handing of the thread being incorrect
i was lucky in respect of the fact it had not milled itself through the gear box housing the lotus guy said that it was only the second one he had ever seen
so to fix gearbox out refurb whilst out back in with new clutch
i hope no one else has to go through the pain of losing a nut

tommy wrote:well my problem gear box ie nut on main shaft
as i have already said i have sufferd a gearbox faliure due to the nut being threaded on the wrong hand this has led to a problem selecting gears lucky for me that the nut did not mill its self out of the gearbox casing as a result a rebuild and a new clutch are now on the cards i will ask again as the lotus man said that he had only seen this twice if anyone else has a comment

Do the cables (or is it the clip) normally fail at the gearbox end or the gearknob end?
I've lost 2nd, 4th & Reverse, but after a quick look the cables seem to be all connected & moving at the gearbox end.

Hmmm, the 3 gears which require pulling the fore/aft cable. Sounds like a failure to me in a location which maintains cable alignment (ie once they get hidden inside the sheath).
You may as well take the gear stick out anyway. You'll need to do this whether you repair or replace the cables.

OK got the gearstick out & all looked ok at that end too, so went back to fiddling at the gearbox end. With the gearstick loose I could now feel that the plastic outer sleeve was not seating correctly in the bracket. Although it had popped out the bracket the retaining clip was still there so fiddled about to re-seat the plastic sleeve in the bracket, got the retaining clip back, refitted the the gearstick & it feels back to normal (although I've taken it for a test drive yet). I guess I'll be getting in touch with Bob about stainless steel cables & fittings soon!
