Flywheel need help

Postby tomac1975 » Thu 09.05.2013, 13:46

Hi,

I urgently need a flywheel for my NA, the old one too badly warped to be machined. Garage can't track one down.

Hopefully someone can help.

Tom :(

Clutch went. Lots of over-heating flywheel beyond salvage and nigh on impossible to source.
She has now gone to the well known élan Womble Surfboard Phil. Who will make good use of it.
When funds allow I shall return.

I bought Tom's NA as a project, I hope to resurrect it as a decent car given it's excellent service history and a rare car to boot. The body work is really good and Tom has put a fair amount of effort in so it would be a shame to break it (even though I could do with the bits for another project car).

It arrived on a flat bed truck with the gearbox in the boot and a few bits missing. Tom arrived a week or so later with a boot full of the missing bits and I have rebuilt toe doors (including a seized door motor) and lots of other small jobs done the roof holes etc.

I bought the new flywheel from the USA and had it checked, all was good but I also got a used flywheel in good condition from PDH (Paul) and had it re surfaced (skimmed).
Annoyingly the engineer removed the locator pins (so he could skim the surface) and bent 2 of them in the process; which is what you would expect but the pins are obsolete so I had to make some new ones.

I fitted a new Clutch plate and pressure plate, I managed to torque up the new flywheel bolts with my brand new shiny torque wrench; which then died, no copperslip or lubrication was used here (because I'm not an idiot) Locktite was used (because I read the manual).

Steve (SJ) very kindly lent me his Lotus clutch fitting tool. The gearbox is quite a heavy lump so it took an hour or two to fit it up to the engine, all turny things now turn as expected.

Next job is to fit the gear cables and LHS suspension geometry, fix all the things I found that were broken and refit the lower engine frame.

Luckily I had a few fasteners in my collection so the engine mount went on really nicely and I got shot of a load of rusty ones.

Cost so far for the project (excluding the car) is under £500 so far.

Gearbox on a few hours later the suspension and cables were fitted and then I went to replace the gearbox oil......

The location for the fill hole could not be much worse; so I drained the box and put a prescribed 1.9 Litres of finest fluid in the top - by removed the the gear selector box. And that's a good tip for anyone! ;-)

I had fun getting out the old broken Bush.

It's all back together and running, I stuck some nice High Spec brakes on whilst I save my pennies to get the OEM Callipers rebuilt.

It took a fair few hours to get the engine frame back on by drilling out broken screws and re cutting rusty threads etc, a few repairs done to the underside whilst I was there and a newish lip spoiler.
