Heavy Clutch Pedal

Postby Ultimatt » Sat 07.12.2013, 19:40

Hi guys,

Ove the last two weeks the clutch pedal on my 1990 SE has got VERY heavy. It has approx 123k on the clock.
The clutch cable was replaced a few months (maybe 3) ago and has been fine since.
What is a heavy clutch pedal a sign of? And how do I tackle the problem?

Cheers

Matt

Hmm, at risk of stating the obvious - early onset arthritis in the left knee???? - Ibuprofen gel works for me

Okay, assuming it isn't that - i would suggest initially disconecting the clutch cable at the gearbox end and check that the new cable and pedal are running free - it may just need a bit of lubrication.

Failing that - it's possibly a pressure plate problem, so will need a new clutch :(

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

Thanks Dave... Did wonder initially whether age had degenerated the muscles ;-)
Put her through the MOT last week and my mechanic mate lubed up the cable and arm as best he could... Do guess I am looking at a new clutch. Having not done a clutch before... Or directed anyone else to do so... What parts will I need from SJ and what's the process like? Is it a gear box out job? :-S

Hmm, not sure of the best way to advise on this - I did mine whilst the engine and gearbox were out of the car, so it was really easy!

I've known people do it by removing the gearbox (like the way it states in the workshop manual) - but I've also known some of the bolts which hold the prongeron to the rafts/chassis bars/chassis to be rusted so solid that they have snapped and needed to be drilled out - doubling the length of the job - not so bad if you do it yourself, or get a 'fixed price' quote, but it can add quite a lot onto a garage hourly-rate.

As for the parts, there are many discussions on here about which one to get, so i'm unsure.....

...but I got mine from Rockauto in USA.
