It is the only approved item.

Redline or TAF-X.

mylotus,
see
here for how to do it and which oil to use.
As Sy said, "Castrol TAF-X 75W/90" or "RedLine MTL" (Manual Transmission Lubricant) fully synthetic 70W80 GL-4 gear oil .
There used to be another write-up by Andrew Ennis on how to do it, but it's disappeared I'm afraid. He's the fastest I've heard of and it took him about 45 minutes - allow double that.

Hi
There is an easier method of replacing the gear box oil but you need access to a high lift ramp.
After draining you need a "hand type" pump a piece of rubber tubing and a "third" hand.
The idea is to "pump" the gear box oil back in the same way it came out
after filling the container with a more oil than you need.
The type of pump is hand operated with a lever which works by suction
and by connecting a piece of rubber tubing the same size as the gear box oil plug you can then "PUMP" the oil back in through the hole that the oil came out of. By filling the container with a bit more oil than you need to allow for spillage your "third" hand works the pump while you hold the rubber tubing upto the hole and when you have used up all the gear box oil bung in the gear box oil plug. JOB DONE saves removing the speedo gear drive.
Have a picture of the pump to show the idea with the tubing

Do you spill oil everwhere swapping from the tube to the bung?
Another way would be to fill through the selector housing which is much more easily accessed. Some people even make a custom port to fill through!

Hi
No not really as the tube stops the oil from coming out, you have the plug handy and just replace will a small amount of oil loss. Where is the selector housing? and how do you get to it.?

Your going to lose oil when trying to fit the Bolt back in, why not just use the refill plug

John,
The selector housing is the one on top of the gearbox where the cables attach. This is only four bolts to remove, but still a bit of a hassle.
The refill plug to which Monty refers is not fitted on either of my gearboxes. It could easily be tapped out though. I reckon a filler on the gearbox breather (on the selector housing) would be best.
It would still have the issue that you can't check the level though! Anyone got a solution for this apart from 'I know it doesn't leak and I put the right amount in'.

Candles
All the M100 gearboxes have a refill hole just that it`s blanked off, but u can unscrew the blank with a pair of grips and then replace with the same bolt as the drain plug and O ring.

Monty is correct about the blank plug - It's a 'D' shaped thingy & I've posted details of it elswhere here - sorry, I'm not up on this link thing but search for D shaped plug, filler plug or the like.
As for the selector box please note that the vent is plastic and simply pushes in so I guess you could go that route if you need to.
I've filled the box twice now from the Speedo opening, on differant gearboxes, and both times 1.9 litres has it to the correct level, even with a Quaife fitted
