If you need to check the plastic bush at the gear stick end, you will have to disconnect both of the cables from the gearbox selector and disconnect the cables from the securing bracket. This will then give you enough cable length to remove the gear stick and check the bushing there.
By the time you have done the above, you are well on your way to changing the shift cables!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
