Knocking noice at the front of car !

Hi Just started today, there is a knocking noice from the front of my car just started to day sounds liek something banging against something ! any ideas , could it be suspension or something?

Does it sound like it's coming from the Right or Left?

I had a knocking on mine last year. It sounded like the exhaust bangingn the sump, but could only be heard when clutching/declutching.

The knocking sound, it sounds like its coming from the drivers side, when I slow down to a junction or move very slowly ! it starts to know against something sounds like the body work !
just happen this morning, I did get my brakes bled on the saturday but didn't notice a noice and i didn't take the wheels off either !

I agree: The likely cause is that the exhaust has slightly changed position due to a knock with a speedbump or similar and is now contacting the crossmember or chassis. If you crawl underneath with a torch you'll be able to find witness marks and a very small gap if this is the case.

As was already mentioned though, more info please as a rhythmic knocking could be a wheelbearing, driveshaft etc etc.

Hi guys thanks for you help I did have a bog knock on a speed bump on the satuday !!!! Will check tonight in this lovely rain !! thanks again will keep you posted ( The noice isn't constant and I can feel it through the foot well not the drive shafts I dont think) Does the suspension make any noice when it comes loose?

Ah! Update having read your latest post: Check the brake hoses thoroughly before you drive again! If whoever bled the brakes had moved them, they could be fouling on the inside of the wheels which is a timebomb, i.e. an accident waiting to happen.

If this isn't the case and you get the noise other than when changing from accelerating to decelerating, i.e. with the clutch pressed down, it could be a wheel bearing. I had one start knocking and I thought it was loads of other things before I finally found it.

Dont think it is a wheel bearing ! If it is a wheel bearing should it be a humming nice rather than a knock !

tight.. same thing in my mates car once, 2 bolts undone

Had this happen to me on my 1st trackday at Oulton Park which was after i did the a Stud conversion

20-30 mph driving down the street seeing ya wheel going the other way...

not so bad..

For those of you who aren't aware of the story, my wheels had not been budged for a while, and were torqued up to my normal setting (FT!).
The car had got me from Nottingham to Liverpool via The Cat & Fiddle, and then round the Isle of Man without incident.
But during one of the last sessions of the trackday the car suddenly started feeling very wierd and wayward.
I thought I had a puncture, but on returning to the pits it turned out that the LHS front wheel bolts had all loosened!!!
I put it down to the fact that being a clockwise track that wheel was doing the hardest work and being subjected to the most heat cycles, but I'll never know for sure. Just glad I didn't press on, that's all.

I think I did do a long time back (before I knew better), but there's hardly any evidence of any now.

I had a knocking sound from the front drivers side of my elan which sounds like what you describe and it was the horn bracket. If I remember right it attaches to the plastic trim on the underside of the car just in front of the wheel and the plastic had broke which it attached to so it was banging around, i could hear it when the car was slow moving or stationary with engine running. Easy to check - if you look/reach under the front of the car just in front of the drivers side wheel you should be able to see or feel it.

It is now doing me head in ! lol The knock doesn't always happen !! So I can't take it to a garage for an assement check !will check the horn thingy though ! god its driving me nuts !
