Noticeable clicking in reverse, but only under load (i.e. engine on). This means it's likely to be a CV joint that needs replacing.
Wondering if the CV joints are available from other makes/models?

Does this mean you are driving your car again?

I am not sure but since I have had to change mine on both my Elan I am very familiar with this part. I have been looking at the Isuzu and Geo drive shafts and they look identical. I have not really tried replacing on with an Isuzu but at least the ends look the same. If the shaft is a different length then it is a easy "swap"

Check the Isuzu drive shafts on eBay right now, there are a bunch and cheap.

I looked for a bit but was un-able to find any information stating what
Isuzu / Geo CV joint will work as replacement for the M100. My passenger side outer boot split sending a greasy mess throughout the wheel well and inside the wheel.
Any thoughts on whether I should replace the half shaft or just put two new boots on? (Inner / outer) the car has 48k on it and there are no noises out of the cv joints. I think probably just replacing the boots is the way to go. Are the boots a standard sized item? I have never worked on cv joints before. Does anyone have a part number for Isuzu / Geo axle boots? Also, are the split style boots acceptable to use?

The manual has some good stuff about this... it pretty much says that just as long as you don't get any abnormal noise/vibration doing just the boots should be okay. I ran this by my Lotus mehcanic when I had a booboo and he totally agreed. The boots straight from Lotus weren't that expensive (<$50) if I remember correctly.

I put a split boot on one of mine and it has been fine.

After all it's only a freaking boot to hold the grease in -- why pay a king's ransom. I'd rather put 10 split boots on over the years than pay 20X as much and all the labor to put on an OE boot.

I remember someone got a boot that they used that was the same size and I'm thinking it was a Honda or something like that?? It was in the Forum a while back . . .

Just get a caliper and measure the diameter of the 2 ends and go find a boot to fit.

The boot is off a vauxhall. there is a thread with a part number on parts cross reference .A boot made by a company called Shaftee will fit.

There are instructions somewhere on this site, it might be from the main page about how to change a CV boot using a split boot. Most importantly;

1-If the boot has split stop driving the car, you might lose all grease and kill the CV joint.
2- If the CV joint is making any noise it needs replacing (imagine it coming apart at full speed going around a corner, first the wheel comes off.......), if the joint isnt making a noise it should be ok.
3 - follow the instructions carefully (I think Sy wrote them), most importantly clean ALL the old grease away, and I mean ALL. 1st time I did a split boot on a renault I left a bit of grease on there, it got on the boot join and the boot split rapidly afterwards.
4 - Sy, I and several others have done split boots on the Elans, do them properly and you dont have to take much apart and they are far easier than whole boots. Mine has not been a problem and past an MOT without a hitch. I was lucky though, I spotted mine just starting to split as it went for a new exhaust.

Forgot to add, whole kit is around £15 from a parts dealer, I think I got mine from Brown Brothers who are in Bishops Stortford near you.

Hi

There is any "easy" way to replace the "boot" that does not involve taking apart the suspension.

Disconect the bottom ball joint and steering joint after removing disc brakes etc.

The shaft will hang loose and the boot can then be removed leaving the suspension untouched (steering angles etc caster,cam)

DO NOT FOLLOW LOTUS INSTRUCTIONS

Time taken less that 1 hour.

Great information! I appreciate the input. I will put off the repair for about a month due to work...so until then she will sit.
While I am in that area, I will put the brake up-grade kit on (that has been sitting in the garage).
