That split does not look very normal to me. It looks like something has cut it rather than a stress fracture.
When a gaiter splits, it usually goes along one of the concertina creases. I am, no mechanic but have never seen a gaiter split along the axis of the shaft like in the pic above. Once the CV joint is exposed to the air, the grease starts to dry, dirt gets in & starts to wear the joint.
That split is enormous & does not look like normal wear & tear.
Any split slowly propagates too. It would take some time to grow that big, so the joint would have dried...but it looks greasy.
