Jackshaft Bearings

Thanks for the info.
I've now replaced the bearing. No problems at all with pulling out and putting the new one.

Next question is, what type of grease is meant to go there now?
I have lithium and moly grease already in the garage as well as packets of "CV joint" grease that came with boots.
The bearing seems to have a rubber shield, I've used lithium in CV boots before but that doesn't mean it's the right thing to do

It is a sealed bearing so the function of the grease you are putting in is to lubricate the lip seals any grease will do but don't put too much in.

So... It's not even been a while year, and the yellow car needs the same job.
My issue at the moment is that I may have damaged the replacement bearing when re-installing the shaft.
There's a bit of play which as far as I recall didn't happen with the NA when I did the job.
The shaft was installed by holding the bracket in the vice and lining up the shaft in the bearing and pushing while tapping the end with a leather hammer head.
I don't have any means of pressing the shaft in due to size, unless I take the whole thing to someone else workshop.

I'm ordering another bearing just in case I may have a premature failure but would like to hear details on refitting the shaft from others just to confirm what level of idiot am I

Although this is shaking a bit, I'm going to put back in the car and give it a go.

I had an Epay-purchased GKN wheel bearing go after a similar amount of time, on inspection it looked like the real thing, but I could only conclude it must have been a fake.

I know what you mean. but this bearing came as a pack of 3 from the same dealer. the other 2 were fitted, one to my NA and the other to a friend's M100 and both were fine, this final one is the onyl one that is wobly after instalation. which leads me to assume its something I've done and not necessarily the bearing's fault

How much play is normal in the jackshaft bearing assembly? I have only notice a fair degree of movement when reinstalling it after replacing the engine and gearbox. The linked Youtube video shows its movement - I think the CV is OK, the wobble starts from the support bearing, the clicking/tapping sound is because the hub nut has not yet been installed. I guess it is excessive and time for a new bearing and seals?

this is one of those subjective ones.

i wouldnt bother changing that unless there was some noises going on. mine had that amou o play for years before i changed it. and right now the other car is in similar condition, ive not given it a second thought tbh

Mine had less play than that and I was getting a consistent vibration at 60 mph. The community here all agreed that a 60 mph vibration usually happens when that bearing is starting to wear. It's not to difficult to get the jackshaft out if you want to change it.

Thanks for the inputs, since this is not as good as it could be I have ordered the bearing and seals, but since I have already filled the gearbox with fresh oil I will run the new gearbox in for a few miles then drain the oil and change the bearing, I'll at least get a little bit of value from the oil I've just put in! Thankyou.

a good time to change out the D plug for a remote filler if you haven't already!

Yes, I swapped the D-plug before fitting the gearbox, makes refilling much easier

theres nothing wrogn with draining the oil to a clean container and reuse it.
its not like brake fluid where it atracts the moisture.

Thanks, I hadn't thought about re-using it. I'll be careful when draining the oil and will consider its reuse if it looks OK, since the gearbox is clean inside and out I guess it should'nt pick up any contaminants.
