3rd CRUNCH!!!!

Postby ektrolleyboy » Sun 09.11.2008, 12:19

Everytime I hammer the ELAN, usually over-taking from 2nd to 3rd. On the super-fast change the gears crunch as I hit 3rd. Is this normal for the ELAN?
Do you need to slow the pace down on this old car a bit? Or is mine buggered?

I don't/haven't had this problem on any of my other cars (and that includes some real exotica and some shite!). Ever! Before the quips start about my driving style.

Thanks for that thread.

Read through it... And Oh sh*#t! Comes to mind!!!

Oh well... It's only on mad 2nd to 3rd gear changes so I'll just have to back off a little which is a good idea until my brakes are uprated anyway.

Hi all, Im having a similar problem. When car is cold it changes through the gears ok, but once warmed up I get the crunch changing up or down into 3rd.
But things have got worse. A few weeks ago I noticed I couldnt select 5th, and another time it wouldnt go into reverse but then corrected itself.
Out driving the other day I stopped at a roundabout and tried to select first but it wouldnt go into any gear atall After a lot of jiggling the gear stick it eventually went in and seemed ok again, but its been playing up ever since and still cant get 5th.

Any ideas? Or can anyone recommend someone near me who could have a look at it. Im in Basingstoke Hants.

Have had the fifth gear issue and was fixed by Gerald at GST, have a look at this thread:

viewtopic.php?f=48&t=14484&hilit=gearbox+nut+loose&start=20

Third started to crunch on my car last year, not altogether surprising after 166k miles. I called around but no joy, one clown in Sheffield, supposedly a gearbox specialist, told me that you can't get the parts, buy one on ebay!! WTF kind of specialist is this?

Alan Head had a timely post:

I took it to Alan Voigt, one of the few specialists who knows the M100 gearbox. He told me third gear synchro is the only failure he sees on these boxes. He replaced that, inspected everything else and replaced the d/s seals.

Our gearbox was "crunchy" from 2 to 3 and from 3 to 4 when we got it. Replacing the transmission oil with correct spec completely fixed this overnight.

:agree: My runabout for business use is a Subaru Forester and when approaching 90,000 miles the gearbox was getting really 'baulky' with occasional crunches and I was thinking I might need to change the car. At 90,000 it had a service that included renewal of all transmissions oils, done every 30,000, and I thought I was driving a new car afterwards. I never realised new oil could make such a huge difference to gear selection.
