Gearchange cable

I am trying to change my fore/aft gearchange cable. I have removed everything needed but my problem is that the rubber bushed eye on the end of the cable (gearbox end) doesn't go through the bracket on the gearbox. I am trying to pull it out from inside the car.Is this the right way to do it or should it be pulled out from the engine bay? I am assuming that you can change one at a time? I know i should refit ABs but i have spares, just as well use 'em.

the cables will go thru from either direction, it's just a matter of preference...

As for the eye end, there's a subtle slot in the bracket, just spin it round till it fits, it's still quite a snug fit...

on the AB cable front, They are taking quite some to deliver, But at least I've worked out how to repair a broken one

This is a picture of the bracket that came out of my car when I installed the AB cables. If I'm not mistaken, the cable doesn't have to go through the bracket the way you make it sound. The two cables mount in the two holes that are open at the top of the bracket, and they slide in from that opening.

When I did my cables, I found it easiest to pull them through from inside the car. Attach the shifter end of the new cable to the gearbox end of the one it's replacing (cable tie will do the job, or in the case of one of the cables -- can't remember which -- you can put the bolt on the shifter end of the new cable through the eye on the gearbox end of the old cable) and pull it through. It will take some wiggling and squirming getting the cable to turn the corner into the tunnel, but it will eventually go.

Probably. I picture a bloke at Hethel, looking around for a bracket, then when he can't find one, just making one to fit.

What the hell made me think of fitting a secondhand cable!! The actual changeover went quite well...21/2 hours, but now it's on, i cant turn the adjuster on the cable.I know its tight in there but has anyone used some sort of tool to grip the adjuster to turn it?
